Shirley Claressa (Wallace) Hunnewell

AUGUSTA – Shirley Claressa (Wallace) Hunnewell, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2022 at the age of 92.Shirley was born on Sept. 29, 1929, and grew up in New Britain, Connecticut, the daughter and youngest of six children of William James and Marie Carew Wallace. Shirley often spoke lovingly of her parents and her memories growing up with little in material things, but happy because she was surrounded by the love of her family.Early in her adult life, Shirley worked at Corbin Cabinets in New Britain, where she met her future husband, Henry Hunnewell, who had grown up in Maine but moved to Connecticut after serving in the U.S. Army. A few years after marrying and having two children, they packed up and moved back to Henry’s hometown of Skowhegan. They owned and operated Beane’s Taxi in Skowhegan for several years, and Shirley worked at many other jobs as well to make sure that her family could have everything they needed. Everyone else being happy and having what they needed was always her first and only priority, and because of that she was loved by everyone who knew her. Her gratefulness and appreciation for even the tiniest of things was remarkable, and allowed her to live a full, rich, and satisfying life. When her children were young, camping trips were a family tradition, as well as day trips to take the kids swimming anywhere they wanted to go, and Sunday dinner at Donald and Melba’s (Henry’s parents) with the entire extended family was hardly ever missed. After her children were grown there were many shopping trips with her daughter Lynn; time well spent cheering on her grandchildren at almost every one of their sporting events, band concerts and school assemblies; adventures with her sister in law Mary Lou; and excursions with Henry and their friends exploring everything there was to see in the State of Maine. Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Henry, in 2018; her parents, William and Marie; Henry’s parents Melba and Donald; her siblings Jimmie, Millie, Marion, Helena, and Eddie; and her sister-in-law Mary Lou Heintzelman of Madison.Shirley is survived by her daughter Lynn Dugal and her husband Conrad of Augusta; her son, Steven Hunnewell and his wife Vickie of Augusta; grandchildren Melissa Hunt, Renee Dugal, Sarah Schaeffer, Ashley Work, and Zachary Work; great grandchildren Addison, Ben, Bryce, Annabelle, and Madelyn; nieces Ann Goodridge and Jane Boucher and their families, as well as many other nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Glenridge in Augusta and Beacon Hospice for the incredibly compassionate care Shirley received, the people who work there are truly angels right here on earth.A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 18 at Smart and Edward Funeral Home, 183 Madison Avenue in Skowhegan, beginning at 2 p.m., with burial to follow in Bingham Village Cemetery.
