Messalonskee High School in Oakland has announced its top 10 seniors for the class of 2022. The students are listed by academic standing.

Caden P. Cote, the son of Patrick and Tracey Cote of Oakland, is valedictorian. Cote is the recipient of the 2022 MPA Principal’s Award. He is an academic scholar who has earned high honors with distinction throughout high school and is recognized by the AP Program as an AP Scholar.

Cote has participated in cross country, nordic skiing, and track all four years of high school. He has served as the captain of the cross country team and Nordic skiing team. He has been one of the senior leaders of the math team and a vital member of Key Club, and served as vice president for the National Honor Society and the class of 2022 Student Council vice president. He has been part of the snowmaking crew for Quarry Road Trail.

Cote plans on attending Harvard College in the fall.

Chantelle N. Flores, the daughter of Jose and Kim Flores of Oakland, is salutatorian. She is an academic scholar who has earned high honors with distinction throughout high school, and has been a leader in the classroom and on many councils and clubs.

Flores has participated in choir, band, chorus council, band council, Tri-M and Mastersingers select choir. She has been one of the senior leaders of the chess club and math team, and served as a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. She has volunteered for music boosters, Mastersingers and MMS Band Camp.

Flores plans to attend the University of Maine in Orono in the fall.

Izabella R. Wallingford Submitted photo

Izabella R. Wallingford is the daughter of Richard and Heather Wallingford of Oakland. She has consistently earned high honors with distinction and is a member of National Honor Society.

Wallingford has been a varsity member of the cross country and track teams, math team, and a member of the Gold Ribbon Club. During her senior year, she was selected as captain of the cross country team.

Wallingford plans to study chemical engineering at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, in the fall.

Grace K. Stocco is the daughter of MacGregor and Janet Stocco of Belgrade. Stocco has earned high honors with distinction throughout her high school career, and is a member and secretary of the National Honor Society.

She has also been the recipient of the Brandeis Book Award, and MHS Student of the Month Award, has been a member of the cross country running and ski teams all four years, and was selected captain of the cross country running team this year. She is a US youth ambassador and has worked as a camp counselor at local summer camps.

In the fall, Stocco plans on studying international relations and peace studies at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Owen P. Axelson is the son of Shannon and Tim Axelson of China. He has participated in athletics through soccer and basketball and has assisted with youth programs in both sports.

Axelson was named to the National Honor Society Eagle Chapter and was the recipient of the Rochester Institute of Technology Computing Medal. He has achieved the rank of high honors with distinction, during every marking period, and completed numerous Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses as part of his rigorous course load.

In the fall, Axelson plans to attend the University of Maine.

Emma D. Palleschi is the daughter of Aaron and Keri Palleschi of Belgrade. Palleschi has been a member of the drama program, math team, and key club at Messalonskee. She has received high honors with distinction all four years and has earned a Student of the Month Award, and awarded the Smith College Book Award, for her academic achievement.

In the fall, she will begin her study of early childhood education and development at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor and will continue on from there to earn her bachelor’s degree. Palleschi hopes to be an elementary school teacher in the future.

Cooper L. Barrett Submitted photo

Cooper L. Barrett is the son of Sara and Travis Barrett of Oakland. He has earned high honors with distinction throughout his high school career, and has been a member of the National Honor Society.

Barrett was selected to lead the MHS varsity soccer team as its captain, and was a leader on and off the court who also participated in tennis and basketball. He participated in a variety of volunteer work. He planted potatoes for the local food bank, coached youth soccer and worked the concession stand.

Barrett plans to attend the University of Maine in Orono in the fall.

Sarah E. Hellen is the daughter of Leaha and Ronald Hellen of Oakland. She participated in the MHS field hockey program for two seasons and volunteered in the youth field hockey program during that time. She has volunteered in the booster’s concession stands and was elected to be the secretary for the class of 2022.

Hellen is a mentor and role model as a member of the Central Maine Big Brothers and Big Sisters program. She was named as the recipient of the ShineOnCass Junior Service Award and the College of the Atlantic book. She was selected as a member of the National Honor Society and is serving as that organization’s treasurer. She has been on the school’s honor roll, exclusively achieving the rank of high honors with distinction, and will have completed numerous Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses upon graduation.

In the fall, Hellen plans to attend the University of Maine at Farmington, where she will study elementary education.

Josie L. Russell is the daughter of JR and Erika Russell of Sidney. She has consistently earned high honors with distinction, and is a member of National Honor Society. She is a committed member of the varsity soccer team and has also been a member of the indoor track team. Russell participates in community service activities.

In the fall, Russell plans on studying biochemistry at University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont.

Kiley S. Meader is the daughter of Kimberly Murphy and Lloyd Meader of Oakland. She has been a member of the soccer and track programs. She has volunteered as a peer tutor to struggling students, she was counselor in training for the Oakland Recreation Department and has worked as a waitress at a summer camp for two seasons.

Meader was elected to the National Honor Society, is serving as class representative, and was selected as the recipient of the Elmira Key Award. She has been on the school’s honor roll, achieving the rank of high honors with distinction, and will have completed numerous Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses upon graduation.

In the fall, Meader plans to attend the University of Maine at Farmington to study biology and enroll in the pre-medical track.
