Gerald Kirkland Paine

MADISON – Gerald Kirkland Paine went to be with his Savior on June 12, 2022. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior on Feb. 23, 1957.

Gerald was the fourth child of Seth and Ella (Churchill) Paine, he was born at the Paine family farm, on Ellis Flats, in Madison, on Oct. 21, 1927.

He attended Madison Schools, where he played football and basketball.

Gerald married his only love, Virginia Mae Stoutamyer, daughter of Richard and Gertrude Stoutamyer, on Oct. 4, 1952. Mama passed away Nov. 14, 2003 and has been dearly missed.

Gerald loved to travel, he went to 19 states, and parts of Canada, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, and Newfoundland in 1972.

He lived a short time at Paine Farm, Ellis Flats. From there he worked at several local farms before purchasing the Elsie Stoutamyer Farm, which was Virginiaā€™s grandmother’s homestead. He was a farmer at heart and carpenter by trade.

He built several houses, worked for William Shibley, Bridge Construction, Preachy Brothers, Cianbro, and the Quimby Paper Mill (Great Northern Paper). He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier for 21 years, retiring in 1987.

Gerald has eight children, Linda Scott and husband William of Littleton, N.H., Patricia Labun and husband Joseph of Madison, Peggy Chamberlain of Norridgewock, Susan Arsenault of South Carolina, Kathleen Morse and husband Keith of Oxford, Jonathan Paine and wife Cheryl of Madison, Candace Thompson and husband Mike of Sidney, Dean Paine and wife Juanita of Madison. He has 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Gerald is survived by his sister, Rowena Oliver of Bangor, brothers-in-law George Stoutamyer and wife Carol of Madison, Robert Stoutamyer and wife Rose of Madison, and Frank Stoutamyer of South Paris, sister-in-law, Alice Paine.

He was predeceased by his brothers Raynold Paine, Seth ā€œPeterā€ Paine, and sister, Celia Walsh, sisters-in-law Sylvia Strain and Iris Blaisdell.

A special thank you to his caregivers, Jill and her team, who took excellent care of Dad so that he could remain at home on the farm.

The family would also like to thank the Madison Area High School staff and sports teams for welcoming Dad to all their games and for the special chair that they designed and gave to him. He was a bulldog fan through and through.

Please join Gerald’s family for a time of visitation on Monday, June 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 21 at 1 p.m. at the Gospel Hall Church, 554 Main Street in Madison. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
