More than 500 players, including 13 high school soccer teams from around the state, plan to join the return of the 11-hour, continuous soccer game, Kick For Cass, on Saturday, July 9, at Thomas College in Waterville.

The annual event is held in honor and in memory of Cassidy Charette, a former midfielder for Messalonskee High School girls soccer who wore the No. 11 jersey before her passing in a hayride accident in 2014.

Kick For Cass, postponed for two years because of the pandemic, will welcome back high school soccer teams, playing from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a round-robin play day. From 2 to 7 p.m., community teams of college and high school athletes, club soccer, summer campers, Charette’s friends and neighbors, and others will round out the final hours.

Registration will cost $250 per team for the high school play day. The fee for individuals playing in the community games is $15 per player, according to a news release from ShineOnCass Foundation.

The event is still accepting teams, which must register online at shineoncass.org or email shineoncass@gmail.com.

Kick for Cass is presented by Golden Pond Wealth Management, Central Maine Motors Auto Group, Central Maine United Soccer and Thomas College, with support from Kennebec Savings Bank and Camden National Bank.

The final hour of Kick for Cass will feature a walk-in ceremony and a friendly competition between Charette’s former soccer teammates from Messalonskee High School and her Central Maine United Premiere Soccer team, from 6 to 7 p.m. Spectators are welcome all day.

Messalonskee All Sports Boosters Club will provide concessions throughout the event. The inclement weather date is Sunday, July 10.

To register a team, volunteer, or sponsor, email shineoncass@gmail.com or visit shineoncass.org.
