Leon Strout

MANCHESTER – Leon S. Strout, 76, passed away peacefully with family at his side on June 26, 2022, at the Alfond Center for Health. He was a dedicated family man who loved spending time with his family and friends.

He was born to Everett and Carla Strout on Oct. 22, 1945. Graduated from Lisbon High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for four years during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Chukawan as a bosun and received the National Defense Service Medal.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Therese Strout and his adored children Sonia Barchet (Tracy) of Elmira, N.Y., and Brian Strout (Shanna) of Unity; brother, Everett Strout (Sharon) of New Hampshire, brother, Lawrence Strout (Melissa) of Knox, sister, Louise Heffner of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews. In addition, he is survived by his greatest joys, his grandchildren Jadziah Barchet, Corbin Barchet (fiancé Jocelyne), Elise Brown, Logan Strout, and Mason Barchet.

Leon and Therese settled in Manchester in 1975 where he worked as a meat cutter for over 40 years, retiring from Shaw’s in 2012. He devoted much of his time to his community as an active member of the Manchester Planning Board, the Manchester Grange, previously serving as their Master and was a member of the Augusta American Legion.

Additionally, he was a Deacon for the Manchester Community Church, having previously served on their finance committee.

His favorite hobby was making maple syrup. He was a maple syrup producer for over 40 years and participated in the Maine Maple Sundays.

He was a devoted, compassionate husband, father, “pop”, grandfather, friend, community member that had a passion for spending time at camp with family and fishing. Nothing made him happier than a day on the lake with a fishing pole and his family beside him.

Visiting hours will be held July 5 from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Funeral services will be on July 6 at 10 a.m. at Manchester Community Church, 21 Readfield Rd., Manchester. Committal with Navy military honors is scheduled for 10 a.m. on July 19 in the chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.
