Eleanor Lucille Williams

AUGUSTA – Eleanor Lucille Williams passed away peacefully on June 30, 2022, at the age of 92. The daughter of Charles and Madge Rowe, she was born the second youngest of 16 siblings in Sherman Mills, Maine on Dec. 29, 1929.

Eleanor completed her formal education at Waterville High school in the spring of 1948 and married her one true love Alton W. Williams on June 25, 1950 at the age of 20.

As a homemaker, she raised six children, Alton Wesley Williams Jr. of Bucksport, Maine, Gail St Hilaire of Bradenton, Florida, Sharon Plato of South China, Maine, Clinton Williams of Randolph, Maine, Dale Williams of Bowdoin, Maine, and Jeremy Williams of Livermore Falls, Maine. She also raised many grandchildren and great grandchildren which were a tremendous source of pride and joy for her.

While raising her family, Eleanor took on part time employment as a shoemaker in Livermore Falls and later as a kitchen assistant for the Heritage Home in Winthrop. At the age of 54, after the loss of her husband, she rose to a new challenge, learning to drive a car. She also started a new career as a Cafeteria Assistant for the Winthrop Public Schools.

Her love and dedication to God and family were some of her most endearing traits. Her favorite interests involved reading, sewing, quilting, gardening, and cooking. She shared and passed down many of these passions by example to her children. Love and warmth were stitched into each personal quilt and piece of clothing that she made. Her children, grandchildren, and her extended family will remember and forever cherish all the special things she did for them. Especially her cooking – from homemade English muffins to cranberry tarts, molasses doughnuts, and even root beer.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Eleanor’s life will be held at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, on Saturday July 16, from 9 to 11 a.m. A committal service will follow at the East Readfield Cemetery at 12mp.m.
