Dennis Ray Thurlow

NORTH CAROLINA – Dennis Ray Thurlow, 65, of Spring Lake, North Carolina, left this world for a better one on June 30, 2022. Dennis was born on March 28, 1958, at Loring A.F.B. Limestone, Maine, to Sgt. P. Robert Thurlow and Joyce A. (Argraves) Thurlow.

Dennis attended schools in Poquonock, Conn., Hall Dale High School, Hallowell, and finished at Cony High School in Augusta. Dennis continued his education at The Harley Davidson Factory School in Milwaukee, where he graduated in 1980 with a P.H.D. and Master of Technology Degree. Dennis was known far and wide for his amazing skills, and was sought out by Harley aficionados like John Travolta and Steve McQeen, Dennis owned DRT Racing, building his own race bikes. He was a many time winner of racing events such as “Dyno Shootouts”, and AMI in Daytona. He was also the holder of five Land Speed records with the East Coast Timing Association, on bikes he built himself.

Dennis served his country in the United States Marines Corps from 1973 to 1977. After his service he returned to Limestone, Maine, where he met his lifelong partner and soulmate, Nancy Fields, and would spend the next 44 years together with her. Dennis and Nancy did a lot of traveling on his Harley, seeing many places and forming great friendships that lasted a lifetime. The people they met would learn this about Dennis: A good hand shake would seal many deals, and that was always his way of doing business.

Dennis and Nancy had no children, so when he became an Uncle for the first time he was supremely happy to be called “Uncle Denny”. He was a very warm and wonderful man, with a heart of gold, and was always generous to his family and friends. His dreams were big. and most of then came true.

Dennis was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Robert P. Argraves and Ruth A. Brown, his paternal grandparents Harry D. Thurlow and Harriet Crocker; special aunts, Lorraine Barnes and Roberta Clark, his beloved brother Dean Perry Thurlow, and his loving niece, Jody Lee Weston.

He is survived by his life partner, Nancy Fields of Spring Lake, N.C., his parents of Augusta, sister Susan Kaplan (David) of Augusta, sister Sharon Marshall (Stephen) of Monroe, and brother Dwain Thurlow (Deborah) of North Carolina, and his aunts, Euda Graham and Sandra Marrarra (Dominic). Also special nephews, Erie Kaplan (Renee), Ryan Thurlow, and Tyler Thurlow, and Nieces Tracy Marcouillier (Josh), Amber Kaplan, and Mallory Thurlow; grand-nephew Preston Kaplan, and grand-nieces, Emma and Sadie Marcouillier, as well as many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be arranged at a later date.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday July 16, 2022, from 1-4 p.m., at Fitzgerald-Cummings American Legion Post #2 in Augusta. Family and Friends are welcome.
