Roosevelt Eskil “Ez” Enquist, Jr.

WINTHROP – Roosevelt Eskil “Ez” Enquist, Jr., 88, of Winthrop, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2022 after a long illness.

Eskil was born in Branford, Conn. on Sept. 22, 1933, the only child of Esther Dalhgren and Roosevelt Eskil Enquist, Sr.

Eskil graduated from Branford High in 1951. He attended Upsala College in New Jersey for a year before enlisting in the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS LIOBA for two years before being released after the signing at the end of the Korean War.

He then earned his B.S. from Quinnipiac College in Hamden, Conn. while employed at Branford Plumbing and Heating where he later became general manager and then moved on to became vice president of that company as well as Centerbrook Supply Company.

Ez then became vice president of Sachem Investment Company which owned and operated some real estate as well as a dry cleaning and laundromat business. He left that position to lease and operate a marina, cabins, tackle shop, eeling business, and snack bar in Narragansett, R.I.

Mr. Enquist later became employed by the Narragansett Public School Department and then became a member of the faculty of Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I. where he taught economics, business, and law.

Eskil then made his way to Readfield where he purchased a gas station, apartments, and residence. He settled on Torsey Pond and fell in love and married Terri in 1980. Together they launched an antique, collectibles, and auctioneering business. They opened their shop “Picker’s Palace” in Readfield Depot and ran that for many years. They spent their winters in Florida selling their wares at local antique shows and on eBay. He and his wife retired in 2012 and resided in Winthrop.

Ez was a member of the YMCA in Augusta. His hobbies included photography, boating, and fishing. Eskil was known for his curiosity, intellect, quick wit, and giving you an estimate on any item you owned. He was a member of the Baha’i faith.

Eskil was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Naomi “Terri” Enquist.

He leaves his son, Ronald Enquist of Thailand, daughters Boni–esther Enquist of Marlborough, Mass. and Cynthia Enquist Cushing of Wayne, the mother of his children Nora J. Quinn of Hallowell, stepson, Scott Crystal of Panama, and stepdaughter, Danielle Crystal of Windsor; as well as 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Beacon Hospice, Meals on Wheels and Roberts Funeral Home and those friends and loved ones who provided comfort and support over the last few months.

Ez will be missed and forever remembered by his family as “The Best Poppy ever!!”

A graveside service with full military honors followed by Baha’i prayers for the departed will be held Wednesday, July 13 at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Rd., Augusta.
