Arthur “Art” Wellington Henry Jr.

WINTHROP – Arthur “Art” Wellington Henry Jr., 78, died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at MaineGeneral Medcial Center in Augusta, Maine, while fiercely battling pulmonary fibrosis.

Art was a beloved member of the Winthrop community, an avid poker player, golfer, and bowler. Art was Santa in the annual Winthrop Christmas parade for several years and he also posed as Santa for portraits with pets at the Thomas Agency in Winthrop.

He was a proud member of the Rotary Club and served as President of the Winthrop Rotary in 1984-85. Art was born June 23, 1944, in Bath, Maine. He was the son of Arthur Wellington Henry Sr. and Gertrude (Stilphen) Henry and grew up in Mexico, Maine. Art was in the National Honors Society in high school and joined the Theta Chi fraternity in 1965, University of Maine. Art was awarded a BA in Mathematics from University of Maine, on Jan. 21, 1967.

Art married the love of his life Laura Jean Spear on June 24, 1967, in Bar Harbor, Maine, and worked for the State of Maine’s Bureau of Central Computer Services, in Augusta, Maine. Art started working there that same year as a computer programmer and later rose to become the Director of the State of Maine’s Bureau of Information Services, which supported all the state departments including Human Services, Motor Vehicles, Education and Cultural, Medicaid, etc.

In February 1996, Art received a letter of commendation from former Governor of Maine, Angus S. King Jr., for 28 years of service, expanding and driving the innovative use of technology for the State of Maine.

Art is survived by his beloved wife, Laura Henry; daughter Christine Henry and her partner Lars Jacobsen, daughter Lisa Cote and her husband David Cote, son Jarrod Henry and his wife Jessica Henry; and three beloved grandchildren Connor Cote, MacKenna Cote and Logan Cote; nephews Reginald Arsenault, Jr., Woodrow, John, and Mark Arsenault as well as a number of cousins, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cherished pets, Dempsey, Minnie, Katana, Finnegen, and Baby.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Corporal John “Jack” Henry and sister Mrs. Reginald (Harriet) Arsenault, her husband Reginald Arsenault Sr., and their son Greg Arsenault.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2022 from 4-6 p.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop (face masks required). There will be a Celebration of Life at another location on Friday the 15, at 10 a.m., details will be available at visiting hours.
