Eugene P. Choate

WINTHROP – Eugene P. Choate (“Gussie, The Gusser, Uncle Gus, and Gene”), at the age of 90, completed his journey on this earth on 8 July 2022 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta with his family close at his side.

He was born on 5 May 1932 in Augusta and grew up on Swan Street. Gus is the son of Charlie and Molly Choate, he is a sibling to Don and Harlan Choate, and Dolores Choate Brosnan; the husband of Pam; the father to Tammy Choate Lindsey, Tom Choate and Jennifer Choate. He is the Nampa (grandfather) to Patrick Lindsey, Molly Lindsey Nadeau, and Eugene Lindsey, Jada Choate and Keegan Choate, and Hayley Choate and Ellie (Brendon) Choate; the great Nampa to May Norton-Perry and Mallory Nadeau. He is the father-in-law to Jay Lindsey and Kelle Choate. He is fondly referred to as Nampa to Molly’s husband Matt and Patrick’s wife Celimar. He is the brother-in-law to Anita Choate, Uncle Gus to several nieces and nephews, and everyone’s friend.

Gus was predeceased by his father, mother, wife, siblings, and his companion of over 25 years Liz Cross. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.

Gus graduated from Cony High school and proudly played football for Cony (reminisced about those days often). He was chosen to be the Cony High Student Mayor for a day and carried his long lasting friendships from grammar school through his life. He later graduated from PJC (Portland Junior college) then served in the US Navy during The Korean War. He proudly recognized his service to our country serving aboard the USS Remy (referred by him as “A Tin Can”) until returning to Augusta. He married Pamelia Poor in 1959 and then started a family. He moved his growing family to Winthrop in 1977 where he spent the remainder of his life. He often wintered in Florida but Maine was always his home.

He was a lover of fishing, being on or near the water or just being outdoors, and later in life found a passion for carving fish. His biggest love was being with his family, telling stories of his youth and had a gift of finding humor in every day life events. You often would find him at his home on Maranacook Lake, in his garage, or working outside in the yard with a ball cap on his head and a rake in his hands. He was the guy that waves as you drive by but the guy who would have a conversation with if you were walking by. If lucky enough, he would invite you down for a “red and white!” and always had a story to tell you.

The family would like to thank Androscoggin Home Healthcare & Hospice Care, and The Maine Veterans Home staff for their loving care and support.

The public is invited to Gus’s service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday 19 July 2022 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Route 133, Winthrop.
