Russell Alan Clement Sr.

SKOWHEGAN – Russell Alan Clement Sr., 85, took his last breath with family holding his hands on July 11, 2022. He was born on Sept. 7, 1936, in Skowhegan to Capitola (Tuttle) and George Durwood Clement, spending his life in Cornville, Skowhegan, and East Madison.

At 17 he joined the US Army where he spent the bulk of his service in Japan and Korea, leaving on the SS President Jackson, Feb. 3, 1954. When he returned home, he worked in #2 shoe shop as a cutter for a short time. He then went to work in the woods with Clement Brothers Logging first with an old bombardier then two brand new John Deere skidders in the 60s. He later he joined UBCJA Local 320 and worked as both a Carpenter and Millwright for over 50 years 12 of which serving as Business Agent for the local. After that, if there was a side job, there was Russell, from siding to the warehouse management.

Russell married Carole (Estes) Clement on June 7, 1974. He was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #1457 where he was involved in many fund-raising efforts and held numerous offices including State President. He was also a member of the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge #2531 for over 30 years.

Russell did all he could to help out family and friends, from giving advice you may not have asked for, finding you a job or loaning you the tools to do the job or a few bucks to get you there. He made a friend everywhere he went from playing cards where he never lost, only ever broke even or won $300, to watching NASCAR racing (go Dale) and Football (Go 49ers), there are not many who do not know Russell.

He is lovingly survived by his children Russell A Clement Jr. of Skowhegan, Sandra Burton of Skowhegan, Ronney Clement and his wife Barbie Jo of Monmouth, Joel Clement of Skowhegan, daughter-in-law Kathy Clement of Starks; his grandchildren, Molly Bickford and fiancé Michelle Holt, Cody Clement and his wife Renee, Jesse Clement and wife Kerri, Mackenzie Clement, Casey Clement, Mason Clement, Libby Clement, and Ethan Clement; his great-grandchildren, Hazel Bickford, Arianna, Gavin, and Raegan Clement; and the mother of his four oldest children Nancy (Cahill) Bell. Russell also leaves behind his siblings, Bobby Clement and wife Carey, Danny Clement and wife Carol, David Clement and wife Louise, Zane Clement and wife Deb, Marie Sylvain, Loretta Fitzmaurice, Laura McManus and husband Arthur, Pil Marshall, Nora LeBlanc and husband Dennis, Patricia Clement and Kitty Benner; his brothers and sisters-in-law Helene Clement, Linda Clement, Barbara Clement, Steve Estes and wife Pam, Danny Estes and wife Sharon, Ellen Canipe and husband Charlie, Diane Parola and husband John, Sue Estes; his God-daughter Rachelle Gilbert Nunn; and his many loved nieces, nephews, and extended family. He leaves his beloved dog “Princess”. The family would also like to send a thank you to family friend Debbie Brown for everything.

Russell was predeceased by his wife Carole (Estes) Clement; son Reginald A. Clement; his parents; brothers George Clement, Billy Clement, Richard Clement; brothers-in-law Gene Sylvain, Pat Fitzmaurice, Fred “Bing” Marshall, Vincent Estes; son-in-law Ronald Burton; and mother and father-in-law Arthur and Olive Estes.

A Celebration of Russell’s Life will be held at the Eagles Club in Skowhegan on July 23 at 1 p.m.
