NEW YORK — Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer off All-Star closer Clay Holmes in the ninth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Yankees 8-6 Sunday to avoid being swept in the season series.

New York overcame a 4-0 deficit and took a 6-4 lead when Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run homer into the right field second deck in the seventh off Dylan Coleman, Rizzo’s 25th home run this season.

Hunter Dozier homered against Ron Marinaccio leading off the eighth, ending Marinaccio’s 19-inning scoreless streak and run of 56 consecutive batters without allowing a hit.

Holmes (5-2) blew a save for the third time in 20 chances.

Whit Merrifield walked with one out – Holmes’ eighth walk in his last eight games after five in his first 35.

Bobby Witt Jr. was hit on a hand with a pitch, forcing him from the game.

Perez, who struck out twice and popped out to the catcher in his first three at-bats, drove a 1-2 sinker 441 feet into Monument Park behind the center-field wall.

It was the first home run allowed this year by Holmes, who was facing his 181st batter.

ASTROS 3, MARINERS 2: Yordan Alvarez hit an RBI single with one out in the 10th inning to lift Houston over visiting Seattle.

Mauricio Dubon started the 10th as the automatic runner on second and the Mariners intentionally walked Jose Altuve. Dubon advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Yuli Gurriel. Alvarez then laced a grounder off Brennan Bernardino (0-1), who was making his MLB debut, to left field to send Dubon home and start the celebration.

WHITE SOX 4, ATHLETICS 1: José Abreu and Eloy Jiménez homered, Dylan Cease threw six strong innings and Chicago won at home.

Abreu and Leury García had two hits apiece for the White Sox, who have won 10 of 15 and returned to above .500. Chicago, the preseason favorite to win the AL Central, trailed first-place Minnesota by three games entering the day.

Liam Hendriks pitched around Ramón Laureano’s double in the ninth for his 20th save in 23 opportunities.

JAYS 4, TIGERS 1: Matt Chapman hit a two-run home run, Jose Berrios pitched seven strong innings to win his third straight decision and Toronto won at home.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette had RBI doubles as the Blue Jays have won 12 of 15 overall after they took 3 of 4 from the Tigers. Detroit is 4-7 since the All-Star break.

GUARDIANS 5, RAYS 3: Austin Hedges had a tie-breaking two-run single in the fifth to help visiting Cleveland beat All-Star Game starter Shane McClanahan and Tampa Bay.

Cleveland won its first series against the Rays since August 2017 and ended a long stretch of games on the road with a 6-5 record.

Reliever Kirk McCarty (2-2) allowed one run, four hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. Emmanuel Clase worked the ninth to get his 23rd save.

McClanahan (10-4) gave up five runs, seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings – tying a season low. His major-league best 1.76 ERA climbed to 2.07, and the lefty had his streak of going six or more innings with two earned runs or fewer stop at 13 games.

RANGERS 5, ANGELS 2: Ezequiel Duran hit a three-run double in the ninth inning as visiting Texas beat Los Angeles despite Angels starter Reid Detmers throwing an immaculate inning.

Detmers became the first pitcher in seven years with a no-hitter and an immaculate inning in the same season, achieving the latter during the second inning when he struck out Duran, Kole Calhoun and Charlie Culberson on nine pitches. It is the fourth immaculate inning in the majors this year and the 109th in baseball’s recorded history.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

PHILLIES 8, PIRATES 2: Alec Bohm fell a triple shy of the cycle, tying a career high with four hits as Philadelphia won at Pittsburgh.

Bohm hit his seventh homer of the season in the sixth, a solo shot that gave him four hits on just five pitches and extended Philadelphia’s lead to seven runs. It was his second game with four hits in the majors, the first since going 4 for 5 against the Washington Nationals on June 23 last year.

METS 9, MARLINS 3: Francisco Lindor had three hits and visiting New York pounded trade deadline target Pablo Lopez, winning at Miami for a three-game sweep.

Jeff McNeil singled twice and doubled, and Mark Canha also had three hits for the NL East leaders, who won their sixth straight and finished with a season-high 19 hits – 12 of them against Lopez.

BRAVES 1, DIAMONDBACKS 0: Austin Riley hit a run-scoring double off Mark Melancon in the ninth inning, giving Atlanta a three-game sweep of visiting Arizona.

Max Fried, Dylan Lee and Kenley Jansen (5-0) combined on a four-hitter for the Braves, who at 62-41 moved 21 games over .500 for the first time since ending the 2019 at 97-65.

DODGERS 7, ROCKIES 3: James Outman homered on the first swing of his first big-league at-bat and finished with three hits and three RBI as Los Angeles won at Denver to close out July with 21 victories.

Freddie Freeman added three hits and an RBI, passing teammate Trea Turner for the MLB lead in hits. Tony Gonsolin (12-1) bounced back from his first loss of the season as the Dodgers finished the month 21-5, tying the franchise record for most wins in July. They scored 147 runs in the month.

GIANTS 4, CUBS 0: Carlos Rodón struck out 10 over seven dominant innings amid speculation he could be traded, and San Francisco won at home.

Rodón (9-6) got help from his defense early. Left fielder Luis Gonzalez reached over the outfield wall to snare Christopher Morel’s leadoff drive, and center fielder Austin Slater made a running grab of Nelson Velazquez’s hard-hit ball an inning later.

Then Rodon took over. He fanned two in the second inning, then struck out the side in the third and fourth. He yielded two hits, none after the third inning. It was the 18th double-digit strikeout performance of his career and his sixth this season.

San Francisco scored all its runs in the fourth inning by rallying with two outs against starter Adrian Sampson (0-2). Eighth-place hitter Jason Vosler roped an RBI single, followed by No. 9 hitter Austin Wynns’ bases-loaded triple.

INTERLEAGUE

REDS 3, ORIOLES 2: Brandon Drury reached 20 homers for the first time in his big league career when he hit a tie-breaking drive in the eighth inning to give Cincinnati a win at home.

Drury, whose previous high was 16 homers for Arizona in 2016, entered as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning. He broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth with his homer on a splitter off Felix Bautista (3-3).

PADRES 3, TWINS 2: Jurickson Profar homered for the second straight game as San Diego beat visiting Minnesota.

That sixth-inning rally backed left-hander Sean Manaea (6-5), who overcame home runs by Luis Arraez and Jose Miranda to get the win. Luis Garcia pitched a perfect ninth for his first save. The Padres are giving Taylor Rogers a break from the closer role after he blew consecutive saves last week against Detroit.

NOTES

MARINERS: Star rookie Julio Rodriguez was placed on the injured list with a bruised right wrist after being hit by a pitch on Saturday night.

Manager Scott Servais said X-rays were negative, but that the center fielder was very sore and wouldn’t be able to hold a bat for at least five days. The team decided it was best to place him on the injured list so they could add another player to the roster.

• All-Star Luis Castillo will make his debut for the Mariners when he starts against the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

The Mariners acquired the right-hander from Cincinnati on Friday, hoping to bolster their rotation as they chase their first playoff berth since 2001. Their postseason drought is the longest in the four major North American professional sports.

METS: Jacob deGrom will make his season debut against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, Manager Buck Showalter said

The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner has not pitched for the Mets since July 7, 2021. The 34-year-old right-hander was sidelined the final three months of last season with right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow, then was shut down late in spring training because of a stress reaction in his right scapula.

ANGELS: Mike Trout visited Thursday with Dr. Robert Watkins, a back specialist and co-director of the Marina Spine Clinic in Los Angeles. Trout is slated to begin rotational exercises on Wednesday and could return to swinging a bat shortly after that.
