Albert “Sonny” Martin

ATHENS – Having lived a blessed and wonderful life, Albert “Sonny” Martin, 94, of Athens, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 with his loving family by his side.

Sonny was born July 9, 1927, in Everett, Wash., the son of John R. and Clara B. (Bush) Martin. After serving his country in the Army, he travelled to Maine where he met and married the love of his life Anna M. Tuttle on April 30, 1954 in Skowhegan, together they raised five children. He was employed in the shoe manufacturing industry holding several managerial positions up until his retirement.

Sonny was a man of the great outdoors who loved to hunt, fish, camp, and garden. He spent many hours puttering in his woodworking shop building various items his children enjoy and treasure to this day. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, creating many cherished memories with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a founding member of the Church of the Open Bible and dedicated much of his life to serving the Lord there in several capacities.

He had a strong and unwavering love for his Lord. His desire was that every member of his family would come to know and love God, and that by doing so, they will all be together again someday.

He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, four sisters; his wife Anna of 59 years; and their son, Dennis.

He is survived by four children, Julie Miller and husband, Donald, of Concord, N.H., Dana Martin and wife, Nancy, of Athens, Sandy Whiting and husband, Timothy of Athens, and Lori Wiles and husband, Rod, of Skowhegan; a sister, Viola (Mary) Oxendine of Brookings, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

“Well done thou good and faithful servant … Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” Matthew 25:23 KJ

The family would like to thank those who cared so tenderly for him in the last days of his life at Redington Fairview General Hospital.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, at the Church of the Open Bible in Athens with the Rev. Richard Haynie and Rev. Al Buzzell officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Rest Cemetery in Athens.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
