Cynthia A. Herrick

BELGRADE – Cynthia A. Herrick, 84, of Belgrade, died unexpectedly but peacefully at Maine General Medical Center on Sunday Aug. 14, 2022, after months of declining health and a brief illness. She was born Oct. 8, 1937 in Marlborough, Mass. where she lived on the family apple orchard, and found a passion for reading at an early age.

While attending Worcester State Teachers College, Cynthia met a young man who would drive her to campus every day for $3 a week. The young man was Ronald Herrick, and they eventually married…(but he continued to charge her the $3 even after they became a couple!)

After earning her degree in education, she taught school in Northborough, Mass. Cynthia and Ronald moved to Maine in 1967 where she continued her career, teaching English in Manchester, Readfield and eventually the Gifted/Talented program in Wilton. She found deep satisfaction expanding children’s knowledge and guiding their paths for decades.

Cynthia was an avid gardener, and later in life, translated her love of nature into beautiful and intricate paper flowers and silhouette cuttings. She was an active member of the Garden Club and the DAR. She loved visiting her nephew and his wife, Scott and Betsy Herrick, who live at the family farm nearby in Mount Vernon. They spent many happy meals together, reminiscing, talking, and of course, eating!

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Ronald; her parents Stanley and Marguerite (Hall) Barnes. She leaves behind her brother, Butch Barnes, of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Her family would like to thank all the wonderful doctors, nurses, and caregivers at Maine General Medical Center for their compassion and kindness while making her last days as comfortable as possible.

There will be a small graveside service on Friday, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Community Cemetery on Bean Road in Mount Vernon.

Arrangements are in the care of the Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the website at http://www.khrfuneralhomes.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The National Kidney Foundation https://www.kidney.org/

in her memory.
