TAVARES, Fla. – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Helga L. Vavra on July 14, 2022. She was born April 28, 1937, in Berlin, Germany. The third child of four to Vilhelm and Marta Dupslaff. Having survived the bombing of Berlin, mom went on to graduate high school and then came to America at the age of 21. She worked at E.E. Taylor while becoming a U.S. citizen and went on to become a registered nurse. Our mom worked at AMHI in Augusta for many years. After her nursing career she went on to work for Key Bank in Augusta on Edison Drive before retiring to Florida. Residing with her husband Robert Vavra of 33 years and remained there after his passing in 2011.

Our mother enjoyed gardening, traveling, dancing, casinos and a good game of left, right, center with friends.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Bob, parents, siblings, sister Annaliza, sister Giseala, and brother Fritz and many of her friends.

Helga is survived by her son David Maddox of Albion, daughter Catherine Maddox and partner Keith Ellis of Augusta; three grandchildren, David S. Maddox, Charlie Gene Philbrick, and Michaela Sue Ames; nine great-grandchildren; nephew Michale and wife, and niece Christiana all of Berlin, Germany. Special friends, Linda and Pris in Florida who spent many good times together through the years and dearest friends, Holly and Ruthie of Augusta, Maine. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

There will be a service at the Veterans Cemetery Chapel on Oct. 7, 2022, at noon, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

Arrangements were entrusted to Steverson, Hamilin and Hilbish Funeral and Cremation in Tavares, Florida.
