Linwood Louis Lagasse

MERCER – Linwood Louis Lagasse, 90, after a brief illness, passed away unexpectedly Thursday Aug. 25, 2022, at his home in Mercer.

Linwood was born in Millinocket on Oct. 13, 1931. He was the fourth of 13 children of Armand and Evelyn Lagasse.

On June 9, 1951, Linwood married the love of his life, Shirley Chapman. Together they built a life and a home in Skowhegan, raising two children. He loved spending time and being a “Dump” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Linwood worked to provide for his family from a young age, he was a hand sewer at Norwock Shoe, before becoming a carpenter for Lawrence Sylvain. He later joined the UBCJA Local 320 Carpenter and Millwright union where he finished out his working career. He was a long-time member of the Skowhegan – Madison Elks Lodge #2531 as well as the Fraternal Order of Eagles

In retirement, they moved to “camp” in Mercer which, Linwood, with the assistance of his “helper” Shirley, proudly renovated into a home and built several additions, garages, and sheds over the years. He loved to plant a large garden every year. You could always count on having fresh veggies from the garden if you went over for dinner. Linwood had a passion for tractors and equipment. He always had a project going, either tinkering on equipment or using it to build something. Special thanks to friend and neighbor George, who helped with what turned out to be his last project down by the pond. He spent his last afternoon riding in his side by side admiring his property. He may not have shown his “softer side” often, but it was a side of him his family will always cherish, along with the sound of his unique and contagious laugh.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Shirley Lagasse; children, Adina Partridge (Barry) of Madison and Irwin Lagasse of Mercer; grandchildren, Marsha Toth (Kirk) of Oakland, Chad Partridge (Janice) of Oakland, Jackie McDonough (Patrick) of Gardiner; great-grandchildren Leah, Hallie, Colston and Jensen. He was also survived by his siblings; Corrine, Barbara, Janet and Donald.

Linwood was predeceased by his parents Armand and Evelyn Lagasse; siblings Audrey, Richard, Armand Jr. “Duffy”, Pauline, Christine, Eugene, Judy and Brenda.

Many thanks to all the special friends, medical professionals and caregivers who assisted Linwood in the final years of his life.

Visitation will be held Monday September 5, from 1-3 p.m., at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday September 6 at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church at 11 a.m., with a graveside service at 12.
