Shawn William McKeon

LITCHFIELD – Shawn William McKeon, 74, of Litchfield, died Thursday morning, Sept. 1, 2022, at his home with his family by his side. Shawn was born in Bridgeport, Conn. on May 22, 1948, the first child of Robert and Loretta (O’Leary) McKeon.

Shawn who liked to be called “Mack” graduated from the University of Maine at Machias in 1970. He planted his family roots at his home in Litchfield. Afterwards he took the opportunity to teach for the Gardiner School System with a passion for U.S. history which lasted over 25 years. He loved sharing fun facts about history with everybody and was an amazing storyteller!

Shawn was a people person and always had a conversation that included interesting or entertaining trivia and mysteries that engaged his audience. Anyone who crossed his path benefited from his love of telling stories. Shawn was influential in orchestrating the famous 5th grade field trips to Plymouth, Mass. He had a unique way of motivating his students by bringing many historical artifacts into class.

He owned McKeon Motors for over 45 years and enjoyed selling and working on used cars. However, his passion was for antiques and street rods. Always working hard, even after retiring, he kept busy with buying and selling antiques and repairing used bicycles for the community.

Shawn was a proud and stubborn Irish man who favored his Irish ancestry. He had a green thumb when it came to plants, enjoyed dancing to any tune and was an animal lover. It didn’t matter if it was two legged, four legged, winged, or had a tail as he would always find a little treat for it to eat.

Shawn lived life to the fullest. He always liked to make a memory no matter what time of day. If there was a car to drive fast, he was behind the wheel, if plan A didn’t work, he’d go to plan B, and then to plan C, and he would let you know he succeeded with a thumbs up and a twinkle in his eye. He always pushed the limits and had fun doing it.

Shawn loved his daughters, and the family would like to thank all the caregivers, advocates and friends who supported him on his journey.

He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Loretta (O’Leary) McKeon.

Shawn leaves behind by his brother, Kevin and wife, Dianne McKeon, from Massachusetts; sister, Laurie McKeon and her son, Joseph McKeon, from Pittston; sister, Kathleen and her husband, Angelo DeMarco, and their sons Luke, Tristan, Connor, and Raymond DeMarco from Massachusetts; his loving daughter, Lisa and her husband, Charlie Lawrence, from Pittston, his loving daughter, Kimberly and her husband Michael Chonko from Topsham. Shawn is remembered fondly by his four grandsons, Cole and Luke Lawrence from Pittston and Nicholas and Benjaimin Chonko from Topsham. In addition, he will also be sadly missed by his special blended family, Nicole Fish, CJ and Casey Lawrence. Along with special recognition of his girlfriend, Patty McKenzie, from Litchfield.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 12 to 1 p.m. with a memorial following at 1 p.m., at Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
