Western Maine Audubon plans to hold its first free talk of the fall, “Loons,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14.
The talk will be held at the University of Maine at Farmington’s Thomas Auditorium in Prebel Hall. Dr. Mark Pokras, an expert on loon studies, will speak.
Pokras, a graduate of Cornell and Tufts University, will talk about new research findings concerning loons. These findings include new information about the behavior of loons, their reactions to environmental stress, and threats to their well-being, according to a news release from the Farmington-based Audubon.
Pokras is a retired member of the faculty at Tufts. He regularly consults for a variety of private, state and federal wildlife and environmental agencies, and has been doing mortality research on loons since 1987. He is recognized for his work on lead poisoning.
People are asked to bring any questions they might have concerning one of Maine’s favorite waterfowl.
