FARMINGTON — County Administrator Amy Bernard informed commissioners Tuesday that a sheriff’s deputy and cruiser were involved in a crash Aug. 26 while responding to a call of a burglary in progress.

Deputy Stephen Cusson lost control of his cruiser on a corner on the Dixfield Road at the intersection of the Back Road in Weld while responding to back up Deputy Tyler Gray, according to Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr.’s weekly report. No injuries were reported.

NorthStar EMS ambulance rescue personnel evaluated Cusson, who Bernard said had bumps and bruises. Dutch Gap Auto removed the cruiser. Maine State Police investigated the crash.

Damage to the 2021 cruiser is being assessed by the insurance company but it could be a total loss, Bernard said.

It is the second crash involving a cruiser since July 18 when Deputy Brandon Sholan was driving westbound on Farmington Falls Road, also known as U.S. Route 2/state Route 27,  in New Sharon. He was responding to a threatening call in Kingfield when he lost control due to heavy rain. The cruiser crossed the centerline and went off the road.

Sholan was taken by NorthStar EMS ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and was later released, according to another report by Nichols.

The insurance company totaled the cruiser. The county is seeking to replace it.
