David W. Miller

WINTHROP – David W. Miller, a retired Army lieutenant colonel of East Winthrop, Maine, died peacefully with family by his side on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, at the age of 91. David was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served 20 years with the Army Security Agency.

David was born on March 21, 1931, in Steubenville, Ohio, to Margaret Carr and William “Wally” Miller. The family moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where David graduated from Shaler High School. He worked in his father’s machine shop, Hook and Miller, and the neighborhood’s Esso garage.

David enlisted in the Army in 1952 at the age of 19, and married his high school sweetheart, Virginia “Binnie” Schmidt after graduating from Officer Candidate School in 1954. While raising their family they traveled from post to post, including overseas assignments in the Philippines and Germany. After retiring from the Army in 1972 in McLean, Virginia, David served as a technical writer for the U.S. Navy. Later, David helped run his son’s electrical business, Miller Electric, and enjoyed visiting the job site periodically and working as an electrician’s helper.

David loved golf and played everywhere he was stationed before joining Army Navy Country Club. David’s garage and golf net were favorite gathering spots in Virginia, and later in Maine. He ice skated and rode a motorcycle well into his 80s, and enjoyed boating on Cobbosseecontee Lake until last summer. David liked loud hi-fi music, from Bach and Dave Brubeck to Black Sabbath, Merl Haggard, and Pink Floyd. He had a great sense of humor, fun, and adventure, which endeared him to his friends and family.

David is survived by his children, Lynn McHatten and husband Cliff, Brad Miller, Jan Tricarico and husband Phil, Nancy Lawson and husband Bob, and his grandchildren, Michael, Lauren, Glen, Teri, and Parker. He is also survived by his sister Lorna Henricks. David was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Binnie Schmidt Miller, and his wife Eva Whitehead Miller.

At David’s request, there will be no visitations or services in Maine. David will be laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery with his wife Binnie. Relatives and friends will be in attendance.
