WEST GARDINER – Michael J. McKenna, 59, of West Gardiner passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022 at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta after a brief illness.

Mike was born on April 28, 1963, the middle son of Charles G. Dow and Nancy A. Dow and was a lifelong resident of West Gardiner.

He attended Gardiner Area High School, graduating class of 1981. He worked for the Department of Transportation for 35 years, where he started lifelong friendships with many friends that became like family.

Mike loved to play softball in his earlier years, spending many nights and weekends with The Bench and Q-Crew teammates. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, splitting wood, and just puttering around Dalton Drive. He loved to share his passions with his friends and family, and cherished the time he got to spend with his family doing the things he hoped they would love too someday. Mike had a great sense of humor and would have done anything for anyone.

Mike took great pride in being a father and a son. He was always there with some guiding words, a level head, and a shoulder to cry on.

Michael is predeceased by his father, Charles G. Dow and dogs Marvin and Rex.

Michael is survived by his daughter, Sarah Matrose and husband Paul, son Dalton McKenna and fiancé Laura, grandson Charles Matrose, mother Nancy A. Dow, brothers Rickey and Tim McKenna and their families, and his dog Mia.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 11 am to 1 pm at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A private family burial will be held at 2 p.m. in West Gardiner. Following the burial, friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of life at Doolin’s Pub (The Meadows Golf Course) in Litchfield from 3 – 5 p.m.
