“As You Like It” by William Shakespeare is Theater At Monmouth’s 2022 Shakespeare in Maine Communities Education Tour production. “As You Like It” will tour for to schools and community centers across the state Oct. 11-29 and offer school matinee performances Oct. 13 and 14 as well as public performances, for one weekend only, Oct. 14-16 in Cumston Hall, 796 Main St. in Monmouth . This project is part of Shakespeare in American Communities, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with ArtsMidwest.

Performances at Cumston Hall are set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 and 15, 1 p.m. Oct. 15 and 16.

Welcome to Arden. This is the story of Rosalind. Oppressed and exiled from Court under threat of death, she escapes with her cousin into the wild and unpredictable Forest of Arden. All the world’s a stage in “As You Like It,” Shakespeare’s gender-bending comedy, where poetry, mistaken identities, and true loves lost and found abound.

The play is considered one of Shakespeare’s most progressive plays, with strong themes of feminism and gender expression. Rosalind’s will and determination was uncommon for female characters in Shakespeare’s days. And with her disguise as a man and teaching other men of the forest how to love women, she succeeds in her desire for Orlando, as he uses her teachings to woo her, and ultimately win her hand and heart.

Theater at Monmouth has provided literature-based education programs in schools and community centers since the Theater’s founding. Since 2005, TAM has taken the Bard on the road with Shakespeare in Maine Communities— featuring 60 to 90-minute adaptations of Shakespeare with five to eight actors. The target grade levels for the tour are middle and high schools; previous tours have reached more than 6,000 students annually.

“As You Like It” features Catherine Buxton as Orlando/William, Ethan Miller as Charles/LeBeau/Duke Senior, Kat Moraros as Celia/Amiens, Eliot Nye as Oliver/Silvius/First Lord, Jamie Saunders as Duke Frieda/Jaques/Phoebe, Parker Sera as Touchstone/Adam, and Ray K. Souen as Rosalind/Audrey.

All tickets cost $28. Masks required regardless of vaccination status.
