Cal Brown had a good letter in the Wednesday KJ about the continued nuisance and damage of the low-clearance railroad bridge in Augusta (“Some ideas for fixing Augusta’s ‘Can Opener’,” Oct. 5). He presented several potential means of mitigating this threat. However there is one other option not mentioned; that would be to lower the street passing under this bridge.

I realize that would be a major and expensive project with a lengthy disruption of traffic and nearby activities, but it should not be discarded without consideration.

I once saw two empty Canadian wood chip trucks get in trouble there. Because of the diagonal street crossing, the first trailer was pushed sidewise onto its side pulling the tractor cab up 45 degrees off the pavement. The second truck just stopped and waited. During the extraction, the police inspected both trucks and found enough safety infractions to declare them off the road until brought up to standard.
