NWSL: Players for the Chicago Red Stars have called on owner Arnim Whisler to sell his stake in the team following a disturbing report into misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League.

The players issued a joint statement Monday, a move that comes after the Red Stars’ board of directors voted last week to remove Whisler as chairman and forbid him from participation in team operations.

The NWSL also announced that it is terminating the contracts of Orlando Pride coach Amanda Cromwell and assistant Sam Greene following a league investigation into verbal abuse, favoritism and retaliation within the club. Cromwell and Greene had been on administrative leave since June.

SPAIN: Atletico Madrid reached a deal with Barcelona to sign forward Antoine Griezmann on a permanent transfer, freeing the France international to play more minutes.

Atletico said Griezmann signed a contract with the club until June 2026. He was in the final season of a two-year loan from Barcelona. The Catalan club said it will receive 20 million euros ($19.4 million) for the transfer, plus variables that could reach another 4 million euros ($3.8 million).

The teams had been in a contractual dispute that was limiting the 31-year-old forward’s opportunities for Atletico, which reportedly would have had to pay Barcelona 40 million euros ($38.8 million) if his playing time surpassed a certain number of minutes.

Atletico Coach Diego Simeone has been using the forward as a substitute after the 60-minute mark in most matches this season.

FIRENZE OPEN: J.J. Wolf of the United States rallied to beat local wild card Francesco Maestrelli in the first round as the ATP returned to Florence, Italy, for the first time in nearly 30 years.

The 19-year-old Maestrelli played his first tour-level main draw match and broke Wolf’s serve in the first game, going on to take the set, but the American recovered to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Wolf will next face fourth-seeded Maxime Cressy in an all-American second-round match.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE: Red Bull breached budget regulations last season and was guilty of “minor” overspending, the series’ governing body said.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won his first world title on the last lap of the last race in 2021, beating seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in a controversial finish. Verstappen clinched his second straight title on Sunday at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Going over the budget cap by less than 5% is considered a minor breach. Under FIA regulations, teams found guilty of a minor overspend breach can be punished with a fine “and/or any minor sporting penalties.”
