I am writing to ask the residents of Winslow to please consider supporting the fireworks referendum to limit the use of consumer fireworks (“Winslow residents to decide whether to ban the use of fireworks in town,” Sept. 30).

In the late 1960s our family built a small camp on Pattee’s Pond, and it is a very treasured part of our family history. It is a haven for our extended family and was a place of tranquility — up until 2012 when fireworks became legal to use in Winslow.

Back in the 1960s the water quality of the pond was poor and suffered many algae blooms. Through the hard work of many, the quality of the pond has improved dramatically. However, the peace and tranquility of the pond is frequently disturbed by the unfettered use of fireworks. Residents and non-residents are free to use fireworks 365 days a year. The population around the pond has changed dramatically since the 1960s when most of the owners were Winslow residents. We now see the properties occupied not only as short-term rentals but also many of the properties have been purchased by out of state residents.

Some of these out of state residents are prolific firework consumers. One should ask the question whether in their home communities would such unregulated use of fireworks be allowed or if they enjoy the “freedom” of coming to Winslow, Maine, where they can set off fireworks freely?

The community came together to improve the water quality that we see today, let’s work together to make it also a place of peace and tranquility for this fragile ecosystem.

Fireworks have a place in the collective history of our country and should continue to be enjoyed. Perhaps we can agree that there could/should be a time and place for such displays?
