The former chief of the Athens Fire Department has been indicted on charges of sexual misconduct with a minor following his arrest over the summer.

Sean Boyd, 46, of Athens was arrested July 1 and charged with gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact, after a teenager notified police the teen had been assaulted over a six-month period in 2014.

Boyd was indicted last week by a Somerset County grand jury on counts of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual conduct.

The teenager filed a complaint June 17 with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Dale Lancaster said at the time. At the time of the alleged assaults, the child was about 9 years old and knew Boyd, officials said.

Lancaster declined to provide additional information about the alleged victim, such as gender or relationship to Boyd.

After being arrested, Boyd posted a $2,500 bond and was released on bail, with conditions prohibiting him from contacting the alleged victim, the alleged victim’s family or anyone younger than 18.

Boyd resigned as fire chief in Athens a few weeks before his arrest, and resigned July 3 from his positions on two school boards: One for the Athens Community School, and the other for Alternative Organizational Structure 94, of which Athens is a member, as are Dexter, Exeter, Garland, Harmony and Ripley.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but indicates enough evidence exists for a case to move forward to trial.
