WINTHROP – Iris Curley died peacefully, in her home, Oct. 16, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.

Iris was born in Lincoln, Maine, Aug. 18, 1937, the daughter of Kenneth Gipson and Edith (Gage) Gipson. She graduated from Mattawamkeag High School, where she was a cheerleader, captain of her basketball team, and her class valedictorian.

On April 27, 1957, Iris married Desmond Curley at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lincoln. Together, they raised their family in Bangor and then Winthrop. She was employed as a food service worker by the Winthrop Schools, where many Winthrop High School students looked forward to seeing her daily.

Iris was known for her kindness and her wit. She enjoyed many things and had many interests: hosting large and loud family gatherings, boat rides on Maranacook Lake, traveling with family and friends, meeting friends at the YMCA in Manchester most mornings, and visiting family camps at Cold Stream Pond in Lincoln, and East Grand Lake in Danforth. She especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play baseball, softball, football, basketball, soccer, and hockey, and visiting their schools when they had academic projects and activities that were open to the public. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a wonderful, generous Grammy to all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Iris is survived by daughters, Jean Youde and her husband Jon, of Hallowell, Judy Duplessis and her husband, Eugene, of Winthrop, and Cathy Foyt and her husband, Scott, of Readfield; son Michael Curley of Winthrop; grandsons, Peter Duplessis of Westbrook, Eric Duplessis and his wife, Jaymee of Litchfield, Robert Youde, and his wife, Rachel, of Lisbon Falls, Evan Youde, of Hallowell, Ethan Foyt and his wife, Julie, of Monmouth; granddaughter Tabitha Soule and her husband, Adam of Lyman; brother Ken (Bob) Gipson and his wife, Bonny, of Morristown, Tennessee; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom will sadly miss her.

Iris was predeceased by her husband, Desmond.

Iris’s family wishes to sincerely thank the caring staff from MaineGeneral Hospice, and would especially like to thank Emily for her compassion, attention and care.

At Iris’s request, there will be no public visiting hours. A memorial mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 24, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Winthrop. Burial will be Tuesday, Oct. 25, 12 p.m., in the chapel at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
