THOMASTON — An 89-year-old Connecticut man was killed Wednesday night when he was struck by a car while crossing Route 1 after getting ice cream.
He was struck at about 6 p.m. in front of the Hampton Inn, Thomaston Police Chief Tim Hoppe said. The man was staying at the Hampton Inn and had gotten an ice cream across the street and was crossing the road to return to the inn when he was struck, the chief said.
Speed was not a factor and there was no indication of intoxication by the driver, Hoppe said. The driver voluntarily agreed to a blood alcohol test.
“This is a really dark stretch of the road,” the chief said.
The Maine Medical Examiner’s Office was contacted, as was the district attorney, which is standard procedure after a fatal crash. The identity of the victim was being withheld until the family is notified.
That section of Route 1 was blocked off. Rockland and Thomaston emergency medical services responded and tried to revive the man.
This is the second pedestrian fatality in the area in the past week. Lorraine Hall, 70, of Rockland, died Oct. 27 when she was struck by a pickup truck at a crosswalk on Suffolk Street at the intersection of Ocean Street in Rockland. Rockland police said sun being in the driver’s eyes was a contributing factor with the Rockland crash.
