Shirley Ann Hooker

AUGUSTA – Shirley Ann Hooker, 82, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 2, 2022, after a long illness. She passed peacefully, at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 11, 1940, the daughter of Earl and Rosabelle (Chelette) Hooker.

She grew up in Florida and was a 1958 graduate of Haines City High School. Following graduation, she attended college at Milligan University in Tennessee. Upon her return to Florida, she worked as a clerk in the county court system for over ten years before venturing to Maine in the early ’70s. Shirley worked for the Maine Hospice Council for 15 years and later as a legal secretary in Augusta for Southard Hunt and Hebert.

Shirley was devout in her Catholic faith and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, where she was a lector and eucharistic minister. She was also a member of the Secular Franciscan Order. She enjoyed traveling, was an avid reader, and was a person who appreciated a good meal. Shirley had a love for cats, especially Ariel. Her favorite pastimes were simply spending time with friends and family.

Shirley was predeceased by her loving parents, Rosabelle and Earl.

Shirley is survived by her sister, Alice Medley and her husband Max of Georgia; nephews, Todd Medley and Michael Medley and his wife Becky, and their daughter Ashleigh; lifelong loving friends and caregivers, Rita and Patrick Fortin and their family, including: Karen Benner and her husband Lew, John Fortin and his wife Linda, and her Godson Aaron Fortin and his wife Erin. She is survived by her loving grandchildren of the heart including, Sydney Benner, Ellia and Avery Fortin, Jennifer Waddell and her husband Nick and Ricky Garland and his wife Samantha. Great Grandchildren of the heart include: Alexis and Zack Waddell and Lucas Garland.

A private Mass of Christian Burial and graveside committal will be held at Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Road, Augusta.
