A general thank-you to all who appreciate, and are kind to and thoughtful of fellow residents and travelers in Maine. I come to report that in Maine at least we are surrounded by kind hearts, caring minds, and concern for The Other.

Saturday evening, Nov. 5, I reached the register at Save A Lot market on Waterville’s Concourse and found I had neither cards nor card-case in my pockets. I think the manager and all staff but the young man on the open register helped search back along my route through the store. No cards, no case. I headed back to the register, only to be met by the register clerk, who handed me my sack of groceries, saying, “The man behind you in line paid your bill and left before I could do much but thank him,” handing me the receipt.

Somewhere between tears and speechless, I said thank you and limped my way back to my car, where on the dash lay the missing case, cards intact; reaching for my cane on leaving the car I’d parked it out of my direct line of sight, in the dark.

My thanks and prayers go with all who try to help those who sometimes cannot help themselves.  I cannot doubt we walk every day among nameless angels.
