Francis C. Harwood II Esq.

HALLOWELL – Francis C. Harwood, 88, of Hallowell, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 11, 2022, surrounded by his family in his home. (This was his wish and we are all honored that we were able to do this for him).

Francis, aka “Franny” “Fran” “Frank” “Papa” “Popcorn” was born Dec. 9, 1933, in Augusta, a son of Francis S. Harwood and Doris (Clough) Harwood. He grew up with his brother and four sisters in Augusta. Francis graduated from Gardiner Area High School then went back to Cony Area High School to graduate with his Cony classmates. He was the class clown. He loved to make people laugh.

He was drafted into the Air Force during the Korean War in 1953 and served until 1957. While in the service he was an airman and studied engines. He graduated from college with an Accountant Degree (CPA). He also studied Theology. He first worked for Kennebec Savings, then became Head Accountant for Startler Tissue Paper Co. in Augusta for 25 years. He also worked for Department of Human Services. He served as Deputy Sheriff for Kennebec County. He was an honorary page of the 98th Legislature. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a strong Catholic and member of Sacred Heart Church in Hallowell.

Francis enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, camping, fishing, boating, gardening as well as dancing. He would get everyone’s attention at weddings or any kind of reception that had dancing. He loved sitting in the sun and feeling the heat. His biggest passion was genealogy. He had studied his genealogy for over 50 years. He enjoyed talking with people. He was a man of conviction. When he believed in something; he would stand his ground and have the facts to back it up. He would always start his mornings out by putting the United States flag out on the front porch.

He was predeceased by his father, Francis, mother, Doris; brother, Edward “Ted”, sisters Katherine, Louise, and Elizabeth; and his grandson, Talon.

He is survived by wife, Linette (Poulin) Harwood; daughter, Therese Gay and her husband Robert, son, Blake Harwood, daughter, Renee Hippler and her husband James, daughter, Lisa Hawkes and her husband John, son, Julian Harwood and his wife Elizabeth; one sister, Arlene Bernard; as well as 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A committal service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 1 p.m., at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery Chapel, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta, ME 04330. Following the service at 2 p.m., a gathering will be held at the Elks Lodge, 397 Civic Center Dr., Augusta, ME 04330.
