WINTHROP – Maurice A. Berube passed away peacefully on Nov. 20, 2022, at the new Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.
He was born in Nashua, N.H. on Sept. 26, 1930. Maurice graduated from Nashua High School in 1948. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army. After being stationed in Japan he was sent to serve in the Korean War as a teletype operator. After being honorably discharged, he returned home to Nashua, N.H. and on Oct. 20 of 1951, he married his Canadian sweetheart, Rejeanne Picard, in Montmagny, Quebec.
Maurice’s first post-war employment was with the B.F. Goodrich Company as the youngest store manager working in the country at the time. He subsequently worked for the Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. Maurice retired as Augusta’s District Manager for the company after 30 years. He then worked for NRF in Augusta and ended his career as a sales manager for the Knights of Columbus Insurance Company.
He was a member of the Augusta Rotary Club and a lifelong communicant of St. Francis Xavier church. As a longtime member of the parish Men’s Club, he could be found most Saturday nights working at the parish Bingo. Maurice retired in 1995 and spent a lot of his time with his family. He enjoyed automobiles, traveling, and music.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Rejeanne; children, Louise Rochette and Denis of Windham, Roger Berube and Patricia Sprague of Portland, Michael Berube of Readfield, Diane Harwood and Gregory of Winthrop, and Lisa Carey of Westbrook. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Maurice was predeceased by his parents Alphee and Josephine Berube; and his brother, Raymond.
Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to visiting hours at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St. in Winthrop on Tuesday, Nov. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 130 U.S. Route 133 in Winthrop, on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. Immediately after mass, all are welcome for a time of food, refreshments, and fellowship in the Parish Hall, followed by committal services with full military honors at 2 p.m. at Holy Family Cemetery, 139 Townsend Rd. in Augusta.
