Robert Donald Vickery

HALLOWELL – Robert Donald Vickery, 92, of Hallowell, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2022 at the captain Lewis Residence in Farmingdale, following a brief illness. He was born in Augusta on April 5, 1930, the oldest child of the late Donald M. and Mary J. (Leighton) Vickery.

Bob was always a Joppy Boy at heart, and loved Hallowell, where he grew up and attended school. He overcame adversity early in his life with the untimely death of his father when Bob was 10 years old, and an auto accident resulting in severe and permanent leg injury when he was 16 years old. In later life he gratefully recalled the kindness of the doctors and nurses who cared for him and who took up a collection to help him with his education and family needs. Bob overcame these challenges to become a loving husband and devoted father, and he had a long and successful career with the State of Maine. He attended night school business classes and earned a real estate brokers license, while working full-time.

He was known for his gentle wit and good-natured humor which endeared him to all who knew him. He enjoyed nature, birdwatching, poetry, a good joke, a good book, donuts, and a cup of coffee. He loved all sorts of music and was always whistling or singing little tunes. His grandchildren were a source of joy; he read to them, joined in their play, and attended countless soccer games, plays, concerts, and other events with enthusiasm.

Bob was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Shirley Ireland of Kirkwood, NY, and Mary Plummer of Hallowell, Maine.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joyce; three children and their spouses, son Donald (Patricia Turner) of Contoocook, NH, his devoted and supportive daughter Linda Miles (John Miles) of Farmingdale, and son Michael (Laura) of Saco. Bob is also survived by four grandchildren, Goldie Irvine of Westbrook, Clara Irvine of Providence, RI, and Max and Pearl Vickery of Saco; and two great grandchildren, Lillian and Brooks Firth of Hopkinton, NH.

The Vickery family is grateful to the staff of Captain Lewis Residence and to Beacon Hospice, particularly Dakota Perkins, R.N. for their care and compassion over the last weeks of his life.

At his request, no services will be held. A small family graveside ceremony will take place at his interment in the Spring of 2023.

Arrangements are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the Staples Funeral Home website, http://www.staplesfuneralhome.com.
