Joseph R.L. “Leo” Gilbert

FALMOUTH – Joseph R.L. “Leo” Gilbert passed away Nov. 20, 2022 at Sedgwood Commons in Falmouth at the age of 92. He was born in Vassalboro to Emile and Aline (Marcoux) Gilbert.

Leo graduated from Waterville High School where he played on the hockey team. He resided most of his life in Oakland with his wife Shirley (Begin) (Drew) Gilbert. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in France. He was a long time employee of Zimba Company in Fairfield, as a mason and Safety Director.

He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Oakland and later at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Waterville. Leo was an Elks Club member, where he enjoyed playing pool with friends. He was also a member of the Arnold Trail and spent many years skeet shooting.

Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and taking family photos. In younger years, he enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, boating and spending time at the camp on Embden Pond.

He is survived by his son Lee (Kathy) Gilbert, daughter Valerie (Brent) Lovett, stepchildren Irving (Nicola) Drew, JoAnn (Matt) Dworman, and Chloe (Greg) Albright; as well as 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Shirley; stepson Steven Drew; and sisters Lorraine Roy and Juliette Vear.

Committal Services will be held in the spring.
