Jane G. Ferguson

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Jane G. Ferguson, long-time Holyoke, Mass. resident, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Dec. 5, 2022, at Reeds Landing in Springfield, Mass.

Jane was born in Montpelier, Vt. on March 14, 1936, the daughter of Emma Robinson Gile and Earland “Spike” Gile. Soon after her birth her family moved to Hawley, Pa. where she graduated from Hawley High School in 1954. Jane attended Boston University and the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Nursing School. It was at the MGH that she met her husband of 55 years, Dr. Edward L. Ferguson. Jane graduated from the MGH Nursing program in 1957 and later went on to complete her Bachelor of Science degree at American International College in 1978.

Once Ed completed his medical training, Jane and Ed established their home and his medical practice in Ed’s hometown of Holyoke, Mass. There they raised their family, and engaged in many civic, charitable and social activities, forming strong friendships with many. Jane was active in the Junior League of Holyoke, the Holyoke Bridge Club and was a charter member of The Prudent Trust, a women’s investment club in Holyoke, which fostered an involvement by women in the business and financial affairs of their households and their communities. This was a creative and innovative concept at the time. Jane especially enjoyed the challenge of using her stylistic flair during family vacations to remote locations where Ed could escape the pressures of a busy medical practice. She even managed to create French crepes over a campfire in the wilderness and French onion soup on their sailboat in a hurricane.

She was an avid collector of antiques, and in 1980 she became the proprietor of the Golden Bowl Antiques in Holyoke. During Ed’s retirement years, Jane and Ed combined their considerable energy into actively participating in antique shows throughout the Northeast. These shows helped to expand their knowledge of antiques while fostering yet another close circle of friends.

Jane is survived by her son, Edward L. Ferguson, Jr. and his wife Elspeth, their children, William H. and Susan L. Ferguson, and her daughter, Laura J. Ferguson. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Edward L. Ferguson, and their daughter, Susan Caroline Ferguson.

In accordance with Jane’s wishes, services will be private, and a Celebration of Life will be planned for the new year.

In lieu of flowers,

Jane would appreciate donations to the:
