George Daniel “Danny” Smith

WALDOBORO – George Daniel “Danny” Smith passed away at the age of 66 on Dec. 8, 2022, at Miles Hospital in Damariscotta following an arduous battle with cancer and diabetes.

He was born in Augusta on Oct. 16, 1956, to William G. Smith and Nancy (Irish) Smith and was raised and resided in Monmouth for many years before moving to Waldoboro. He often spoke fondly of the time spent as a student and employee of Monmouth Schools.

His career was in the trades including concrete, construction, and manufacturing. He was a proud member of Local 327 Laborers’ Union, and worked on projects at the Portland Jetport, installing gas pipelines across the state, and decommissioning Maine Yankee. He loved to point out projects he contributed to any time he drove by.

George was a lifelong tinkerer and collector of trains, stamps, coins, figurines, and anything else that caught his eye. In September of 2022, he lost LaVonne Beal, his partner and companion for the last 25 years. George was a strong-willed man who valued his independence with a focus on fixing what he could. Hopefully, his drive and focus will carry on in those he will be remembered by.

George was predeceased by his mother Nancy and father William, partner LaVonne, and sister Brenda Foster.

He is survived by his children, Michelle Smith and fiancé Terrie Wing, her mother Julie Lee, Brandon Smith and wife Becca, Jared Smith and wife Carrie, Lindsay McNear and husband Nathan, their mother Margo Smith; brother Harold Smith and wife Linda, brother-in-law Jason Foster; grandchildren, Alexis Curtis, John Gray, Carver Smith and Violet Smith, good friend Al O’Donnell. He is also survived by many aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be held at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, on Jan. 6, 2023, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. followed by a Memorial Service at 12. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
