Janis (Moore) Cross

HALLOWELL – Janis (Moore) Cross, 93, passed away December 8, 2022.

She was born in Augusta, Maine, November 5, 1929, to Arthur R. and Gladys Wright Moore and was a direct descendent of Martha Moore Ballard, as well as Deacon Pease Clark, the first settler

of Hallowell in 1762.

She attended Hallowell schools graduating from Hallowell High School. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music; graduated from Farmington State Teachers College and eventually pursued her Masters’ Degree at Cornell University leading to a position in Washington, D.C., with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Family Economist. Later, she spent a year on Capitol Hill as an assistant to Maryland Congressman, Charles Mathias Jr.

After returning home, she married Kenneth Cross and went to work at the Maine Department of Education spanning nearly three decades, as a state supervisor for Consumer and Home Economics. Upon her retirement she joined Protocol International as a Consultant. Janis was active in the State Republican Party and spent several years volunteering in the Augusta office of Senator Susan Collins.

She was an active participant in local affairs chairing the Hallowell Improvement Association a forerunner of the Old Hallowell Day celebration; a longtime member, Treasurer and Board member of Row House; served as Trustee and Chairperson of the Hallowell Water District; a Trustee and Diaconate of the Old South Congregational Church. She was a member of the Mayflower Society, DAR, Hallowell Waterfront Advisory Committee, American Legion Goodrich Caldwell Post 6 Hallowell Veterans Monument Committee; the Hallowell 250 Anniversary Planning Committee; and Friends of the Hubbard Free Library. In 2013 Janis was named as Old Hallowell Day’s Citizen of the Year.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Kenneth L. Cross, and her brothers and sisters-in law, Capt. Arthur R. Moore and his wife, Florence E. Moore; and Robert E. Moore and his wife, Norma A. Moore; and nephew, James B. Halligan.

She is survived by her nephews, Gregory W. Moore (Roberta), Midland, N.C., and their two daughters, Jennifer Moore and Amy Moore, Charlotte, N.C. ; Bradford A. Moore, Manchester, N.H.; Robert E Moore, Ocean Point; her nieces Laurie E. Halligan, Manchester, Traci-Lee Moore (Brenda), Scarborough; and Lisa A Moore, Norridgewock.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Maine General Medical Center, Augusta, and Waterville and Hallowell Woodlands for their care and kindness provided to Janis.

A service will be held in the Spring 2023.
