NEWPORT — Madden White broke through with eight of his game-high 16 points in overtime Tuesday night as the Nokomis boys basketball team claimed a 49-45 victory over visiting Skowhegan.
After a first quarter that consisted of short runs by both teams, the Warriors (2-0) emerged with a 13-9 lead as Grady Hartsgrove and Seth Bowden hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Nokomis went to the locker room with a 28-25 lead after Dawson Townsend responded to a pair of triples from Adam Savage with one of his own at the buzzer.
After a basket from Hartsgrove to begin the second put Nokomis up five, Skowhegan (0-3) went on a 10-0 run thanks to two baskets from Kyle LePage and two more 3-pointers from Savage. But a 9-0 run fueled by Hartsgrove put the Warriors back on top as the home team took a 39-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
Nokomis failed to score in the fourth despite getting some good looks, but the Warriors still forced overtime as they held Skowhegan to just four points in the frame. That’s when White responded to three River Hawks’ baskets with points of his own each time before his layup with a minute to go put Nokomis up for good.
“We got some good shots and just didn’t make them, but as long as you’re getting those good shots and getting to the foul line, you can’t complain,” Nokomis head coach Earl Anderson said. “It was one of those things where we just had to buckle down on defense and power through it, and we did. It was a good win.”
White added four rebounds. The Warriors also got 12 points and four rebounds from Hartsgrove and seven points and three rebounds from Townsend, who made his return after recovering from knee surgery following football season.
Savage and Kyle LePage had 12 points each for Skowhegan, with the former adding seven rebounds and three blocks and the latter recording eight rebounds. Quintcey McCray added 10 points for the River Hawks, and Collin LePage had six points and five rebounds.
