JACKMAN — Jaxson Desjardins, seventh grade, and Peyton Chaisson, 11th grade, were recognized at a recent lunch assembly at Forest Hills School during this past month.
Students in grades six to 12 were invited to participate in an essay writing contest.
For the Patriot’s Pen contest (grades 6-8), this year’s theme was “My Pledge To Our Veterans.” For the Voice of Democracy contest (grades 9-12), students had to prepare and present on the theme for this year, “Why Is The Veteran Important?”
Both are national contests conducted annually by the VFW.
The William B. Doughty Auxiliary No. 5723 of Jackman sponsors the contest and awards the winners a monetary prize. Jaxson was selected as the middle school winner out of 26 participants, and Chaisson was chosen as the high school winner out of 19 participants.
The winning submissions will be sent along to the district level to be judged. Grand prizes include scholarships and trips to Washington, D.C. National winners are announced in March.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
