AUGUSTA – David Stuart Wilson died peacefully and surrounded by family on Jan. 6, 2023, in Augusta. He was born July 21, 1942, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, to Stuart Wedderburn Wilson and Serena Ann (Simpson) Wilson.
He grew up in Eastport, and was extremely close to his grandparents: Burpee Hazen Wilson and Hazel Leah (Stuart) Wilson; and George H. Simpson and Charlotte (Deming) Simpson.
He graduated from Shead High School (1960) in Eastport; received a degree in Mathematics from the University of Maine in Orono (1964); and began his career at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Mass.
He married Marikay McCluskey (born Theresa Francis), the love of his life (1966), raised four children, and worked 36 years as a statistician for the State of Maine’s Bureau of Vital Statistics.
David was intelligent, warm, kind, and humorous. He loved baseball, opera, and classical music. He was a mathematician, theologian, loyal husband, and attentive father. His deep curiosity, playfulness, and empathy will be dearly missed.
He is predeceased by his wife of 46 years and leaves behind a sister, Diana Rush of Kennebunk, a brother, Stephen Wilson of Old Orchard Beach; four children: Matthew Wilson of Hallowell, Amy “Skye” Stevenson of Hudson, Kesel Wilson, of Augusta, and Nathaniel Wilson, of Belgrade; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.
A period of visitation will be held on Friday, January 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m., at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta.
