Winthrop High School has announced the following scholarships and awards were presented to graduates on class night.

The Steve Warner Award is presented to a Winthrop High School Senior football player, who has demonstrated exemplary qualities on and off the field, emblematic of Steve Warner. These qualities include Sportsmanship, Leadership, Commitment, Dedication, Work Ethic and perseverance. This year the recipient is Sam Bourne.

The Stephanie Lunt Memorial Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship is given to a female student who has participated in at least one or more team sports (need not be varsity) and shown outstanding sportsmanship. This year’s recipient is Emma Shuman.

The Ray Convery Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship is awarded to a male student who has participated in at least one or more team sports and shows outstanding sportsmanship on and off the playing field. This year’s recipient is Matt Beck.

Mark L. Johnson Award — given to the student or students, not necessarily an athlete, who has given outstanding service to Winthrop High School and athletics. This year’s recipients is Lauryn Wood.
Winthrop High School presents plaques to the Outstanding Male and Female Athlete of the Year as selected by the student body. This year’s recipients are James Cognata and Bella Littler.
The Coaches’ Recognition Award is given to a Winthrop High School senior boy or girl for athletic ability, achievement and dedication. These individuals are also someone who has not been recognized throughout the year. This year’s recipients are Nick Keezer and Rhyan Sawlivich.

Winthrop High School awards plaques to the Outstanding Student Athletes (boy and girl) who has participated in three sports during their four years. This year’s recipients are James Cognata and Emma Shuman.

Winthrop Sports Boosters Scholar Athlete Scholarships are awarded to Tyler,Shumway and Emma Shuman.
Winthrop Sports Boosters Varsity Athlete Scholarships are awarded to Sophia Blanco and Rhyan Sawlivic.

The Sports Boosters Rambler Pride Scholarship is awarded to Lauryn Wood and Julia Letourneau.
The Bud Clough Athletic Memorial Scholarship Bud Clough was a Winthrop Resident and an avid Winthrop High School sports fan. He contributed a great deal to the sports community, including but not limited to coaching, working on fields and attending most sporting events. This year’s recipient is Brayden Stubbert.

The Bud Clough Vocational Memorial Scholarship was started in 1973. Bud was a plumber by trade and this scholarship was started in his memory. This year’s recipient is Samuel Bourne.
The Walter Taylor Memorial Scholarship is in memory of Mr. Taylor who loved to run many times a week. He also ran a few marathons and this scholarship is specifically for a student who loves to run. This year the award goes to Kolby Reynolds.

The George F. Wilson Scholarship. Mr. Wilson’s granddaughter started this scholarship in his memory. He was a Winthrop principal for 9 years. Following his career as a principal, he served on many school boards in Augusta and Winthrop. He attended every Winthrop sporting event. He was once a professional baseball player for the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox and believed in pursuing athletic goals. The 2023 George F. Wilson Scholarship is awarded to James Cognata.

The Glenn Scott Hayford Memorial Scholarship was started in 1992 by his family. Glen graduated from WHS in 1990. He was someone everyone liked to be around and he loved making new friends. Glen was also very fond of music and sports and everything to do with the outdoors. This year the scholarship is awarded to Julia Letourneau.

The Lee St. Hilaire Scholarship are awarded to Madison Weymouth and Robbie Feeney.

The Ron Cross Memorial Scholarship was created in August 1996, with donations made in Mr. Cross’s memory, as requested by his family upon his death. In 1990, Mr. Cross was the Artist in Residence at Winthrop High School and spearheaded the creation of the Reflections from Nature sculpture which sits in front of the Winthrop Grade School. This year the scholarship is awarded to Phoebe Dow.

The Helen A. Griffin Scholarship was started by her family in memory of her. Helen was a caring individual and a member of the Winthrop Public Schools Faculty. She loved children and is remembered for her wonderful hugs. This year the scholarship is awarded to Lauren Young.

The Alfred W. Maxwell Jr. American Legion Auxiliary Unit Post #40 is a non-profit organization whose main focus are veterans, youth and community. This year the scholarship is awarded to Brayden Stubbert and Peter Rubchinuk.

The Germaine Auclair Memorial Scholarship is awarded to deserving seniors with a love for education and academic promise.This year the award goes to Brooke Belz and Joshua Hafford.

The Winthrop Education Association Scholarship is awarded to graduating who is pursuing a degree in education. It is believed the scholarship started in the mid 60’s. Mrs. Cook, prior to her retirement used to present this scholarship each year. When asked why the association started the scholarship, Mrs. Cook’s reply was “We believe we need more good teachers. This year the recipient is Lauren Young.

Two Thomas Calcagni Memorial Scholarships are awarded to Isabella Dunn, Peter Rubchinuk.
The Senator George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute awards scholarships each year to graduating seniors from every community in Maine. This year there were nearly 1,300 applications from across the state, resulting in a highly competitive selection process. The
scholarship award amount is $10,000! In addition to the financial support, Mitchell Scholarship recipients are eligible to participate in an array of personal, leadership, and career development programming throughout their time in college. Please join me in congratulating this year’s Mitchell Scholar from Winthrop High School Kamryn Dube.

The Dana L. Childs Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student seeking a degree in education. Dana was a 4th grade teacher for nearly two decades at the Winthrop Grade School encouraging students and instilling in them the confidence needed to succeed. This year the scholarship goes to Lauren Young.
Maine General Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship is awarded to Katie Dugal.

Maine General Mary-Grace Bean Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Brooke Belz.

The Sandie Belden Memorial Scholarship was started by Walter Belden in memory of his wife who was a Winthrop graduate. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior pursuing a degree in the health care field. This year’s scholarship is awarded to Alyssa St. Pierre.

Two The RLC Scholarships are awarded to Aleah Childs, Peter Rubchinuk.

The Stephen Lincoln Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Isabella Dunn.

Donna DeBlois was a graduate of Winthrop High School, as were her two children. She went on to earn a nursing degree from CMMC, the University of Maine at Orono, and two advanced degrees from Husson College.  She was involved in many national nursing associations. This year scholarships are awarded to Brooke Belz and Isabella Littler.

Chevrolet Business Scholarships are awarded to Kamryn Dube and Nicholas Keezer.

The Worthington Scholarship Foundation provides multi-year scholarships. Over the past 13 years, more than 18 million dollars has been granted to graduates of Maine high schools who attend partnering Maine colleges. This year, the Worthington Scholarship Foundation will
grant about 700 scholarships throughout 98 high schools in 13 counties totaling 10 million dollars with the intent to increase the accessibility of college by reducing financial barriers, to provide support for scholars to persist in college, and help minimize the risk of incurring insurmountable student loan debt. This year’s recipients are Brooke Belz, Alean Childs, Trinity Chrissman, Kamryn Dube, Hayden Rivers, Lucy Vachon.

The American Legion Post #40 Busta Ellis Past Commanders Grant is awarded to Alyssa St. Pierre.

The American Legion Post #40 Riders Grant is awarded to Aleah Childs.

Three Winthrop Rotary Club scholarships are awarded to Brooke Belz, Aleah Childs, Rhyan Sawlivich.

The Winthrop School Board Student Representative Scholarship is awarded to Amelie Grube.

The Christopher Caprara Scholarship Fund is awarded to Peter Rubchinuk.
Augusta Kiwanis Club Scholarship goes to a deserving student who has displayed community and school service with consideration given to a student’s academic achievement, character, and leadership capabilities. This year the Scholarship is awarded to Jayce Corgan.
Harry & Flora May Davis Memorial Scholarship. Money was given in February of 1995 to the Winthrop High School from the estate of Hollis B. Davis in the name of Harry C. Davis and Flora May Davis. The scholarship is awarded to a student that is worthy and deserving This year the scholarship is awarded to  Kaitlyn Whitney.
The Stanley Kanzy Memorial Scholarship was started in 1995 from the estate of Stanley Kanzy. He was a graduate of Winthrop High School and appreciated the education he was provided. Mr. Kanzy went on to serve in the U.S, Navy during World War II. This year the scholarships are awarded to Andrew Fay, Alivia Bennett, Elsa Goebel-Bain, Ben Ouellette, Lauryn Wood, Kolby Reynolds, Lucy Vachon, Katie Dugal, Amelie Grube, Rhyan Sawlivich.

The Helena Bissonette Seamans Memorial Scholarship. In 1992, money for this scholarship was bequeathed in the will of Laura S. Bissonette in honor of her late sister-in-law, Helena Bissonette Seamans. This scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who has displayed outstanding qualities of personality and character. The student shall have maintained a high scholastic record, been a member of one or more school athletic teams, and contributed to the school and community’s wellbeing. The scholarship is awarded to Emma Shuman.

Winthrop Lions Club Scholarship. The Lions Club fundraisers for this scholarship every year through their golf tournament and concession stands at athletic events. This year three scholarships are awarded to Lucy Vachon, Peter Rubchinuk, Emma Shuman.

Winthrop Area Federal Credit Union Scholarships go to deserving graduates who are also members of the credit union. This year the students are Aleah Childs and Robbie Feeney.

The Nellie M. Tuttle Memorial Valedictorian Scholarship This award was started in March of 1974 from money bequeathed from the estate of Nellie M. Tuttle. It is awarded in honor of the valedictorian graduating from Winthrop High School. This year it is awarded to Amelie Grube.
The Martha Helen Williams Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a senior who has demonstrated an interest and talent in any of the art forms, music or poetry. The 2023 award goes to Sophia Blanco.

The Marshall Hills Memorial Scholarship was started in September of 2000 by Joan Hills in memory of her husband. Marshall was the Town Manager for Winthrop for many years. This year the scholarship is awarded to Colton Buck.

The Del Bisonette Memorial Scholarship is awarded to seniors who have displayed outstanding qualities of personality and character. Who has maintained a high scholastic record, been a member of one or more of the school’s athletic teams and has contributed to the well-being of the school and community. This year the award is given to Tyler Shumway.
The Carol Norcross Willette Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Trinity Chrissman.

The Pamela Webb disappeared from Interstate 95 in June 1989. This scholarship was created that same year in memory of her. She was a very bright, compassionate young lady and this year the Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Nea DiBiase Stone.

The St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Scholarship for the class of 2023 goes to Lucy Vachon.

The Kennebec Behavioral Health Scholarship is awarded to Aleah Childs.
The Jeanette Cumber Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing further education and who has a love of music. This year the scholarship is awarded to Joshua Hafford.

In 1985 Donald Cadwell started this scholarship in honor of his wife, who passed away as a result of an automobile accident. She had wanted to be nurse but was unable to pursue her dream because she lacked financial resources. Donald created this scholarship to help a student who plans to continue his or her education in the field of nursing. The Avis Adams Cadwell Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Madison Weymouth.

On July 3, 1990, Charlene Goodman decided to start a scholarship in memory of one of her classmates, Charlie Rollins. This scholarship is given every year to a graduating senior and the recipient this year is Hayden Rivers.

The Marie and Donald Stone Memorial Scholarship. Donald Stone was born in NJ but due to his father’s ill health the family moved to Winthrop where Donald graduated Winthrop HS in 1950. After serving in the U.S. Air Force he learned to be a stonemason from his father and helped build what is now the Winthrop Grammar School. Marie Fleury Stone lived her whole life in Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School. She taught school for many years and dedicated her life to improving education and is credited with starting the Adult Education Program in the town. The scholarship is awarded to Isabella Dunn.

The Ramsdell Memorial Scholarship was established to support graduating students from Readfield and Winthrop. This scholarship is awarded to students who are active in their faith and community and are going on to higher education. This year the scholarships are awarded to Brayden Stubbert, Brooke, Belz, Aleah Childs.
The Alice Whiting Memorial Scholarship was started in 1990 upon her death and is awarded to a deserving student to further his or her post-secondary education. This year it is awarded to Nea-DiBiase Stone.

The Philip, David & Stephen Kelley Scholarship was started by their friends and family to help graduates who are pursuing a vocational or community college degree. The recipient this year is Robbie Feeney.

Lewis John Sheaffer Scholarships are awarded to students going on to a 4-year college.
Mr. Shaeffer was a prominent businessman in central Maine. He was the general manager and treasurer for RP Hazzard CO until retiring in 1962. He served 25 years as director of Depositors Trust CO (now KeyBank) for 25 years. Mr. Sheaffer helped found the United Way of Kennebec Valley in 1955 and was a member of Christ Church in Gardiner. He was also active with the Masons and Kora Shrine and served on the board of presidents of Gardiner General Hospital and the Augusta Country Club. Mr. Sheaffer passed in 1993 at age 87. 2 Scholarships are awarded this year to Sophia Blanco and Alyssa St. Pierre.

The Kennebec Valley Literacy Scholarship is awarded to Alyssa St. Pierre.

The MELMAC Education Foundation Tyler/Grandmaison Scholarship is awarded to a senior who makes a difference in the lives of others, is a solid school citizen and has made a positive contribution to the school environment. This year the award is given to Aleah Childs.

The Sadie Roy Scholarship, given to a Fayette student is awarded to Isabella Littler.
