Rodney Latham Scribner

RANDOLPH – Rodney Latham Scribner, 87, of Randolph, died at his home following an illness on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023, with Shirley by his side.

He was born in Rumford on May 6, 1935, the son of Dwight and Evelyn (House) Scribner.

Rodney was educated in Norway schools and graduated Maine Maritime Academy in 1956, then enlisted in the United States Navy, and then worked as a Merchant Marine after his career in the Navy.

He was the State of Maine Treasurer from 1975-1976 and held various jobs within State Government as State Budget Officer; State Controller; Staff Coordinator, Maine Management and Cost Survey Commission; Deputy Commissioner, Department of Finance and Administration; Assistant Legislative Finance Officer; Acting Commissioner, Department of Indian affairs; Staff Accountant, Staples and Boyce, CPA’s. Rodney also was an instructor in Governmental Finance, University of Maine; Author of “Raising State and Local Revenues: Emerging Patterns in Revenue Systems”; He worked under many Governors throughout his career in State Government.

Rodney was a lifelong Democrat, member of 103rd Legislature (Appropriations Committee), Democratic nominee for House seat in the Norway area from 1960 – 1962; Town, City and county Democratic Committees and campaign worker for 17 years; long term member of the 500 Club; Campaign Director and Treasurer for Governor Curtis in 1966; Active in voter registration drives for 12 years; Democratic candidate for State Auditor from 1964 – 1972; Maine Financial Advisor for Carter Mondale; Kennebec County Committee Chairman, and Augusta City Committee Treasurer in 1976, was a member of the following organizations, Maine Society of Public Accountants, American Institute of C.P.A., past president of Maine Chapter, American Society for Public Administration, National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasures, and many other activities in Oxford, Cumberland, and Kennebec Counties.

He had a passion for HAM Radio for many years and enjoyed summers at the ocean with family and friends.

Predeceased by his parents; and sister, Deanne Chaplin.

Rodney is survived by his significant other of 30 years, Shirley Haskell, of Randolph; brother, Raymond Scribner and wife Kathleen, of Indiana; and other relatives.

At Rodney’s request there will be no services.
