THORNDIKE — The Winslow boys basketball team left nothing to chance in the second half of Monday night’s game against Mount View.
Up 40-38 at halftime, the Black Raiders went on a 16-0 run in the third quarter and cruised to a 76-50 victory.
Jason Reynolds led the Black Raiders (12-1) with 27 points and 16 rebounds, while Andrew Poulin added 18 points. Matt Quirion had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Winslow.
“Coming (to Thorndike), it’s always a tough place,” Winslow head coach Ken Lindlof said. “(Mount View) always seems to shoot it well and penetrate, and that was the first half, typical Mount View. Our kids made the adjustment (in the second half) and we did better.”
Noah Hurd and Tyler Russell each scored 15 points to lead the Mustangs (7-6).
Play was tight between both teams in the first half, with seven different lead changes. Despite strong offensive play from Winslow, Mount View answered with some solid shooting from beyond the arc, and trailed by two entering halftime.
But Winslow raised its game in the second half, and the Mustangs went cold with their shots, leading the Black Raiders to run away with the game.
“The first half was fun,” Mount View head coach Jeremy Von Oesen said. “I think we just got a little tired going into the second half. We haven’t had a lot of consistent games. One game a week doesn’t really get you in game shape.
“Credit to Winslow, they came out defensively and played a matchup zone in that second half,” Von Oesen continued. “They played a little more of a matchup zone, jumping to the ball and playing team defense.”
Max Bottenfield added 11 points and eight rebounds for Mount View.
It was the 10th straight win for the Black Raiders, whose only loss came in a 69-59 decision against Lincoln Academy on Dec. 20.
