WASHINGTON, D.C. — Lisa Newell of Augusta has been selected as the 2023 Maine Mother of the Year.

She is the 62nd woman in Maine history to hold this honor. Newell oversees 11 Veterans Affairs Medical Centers across New England. She is a prolific leader who has served in several roles, including as the first female president of Le Club Calumet in Augusta in 2018 and 2019.

Newell, along with honorees from states across the U.S., is scheduled to be recognized during the 88th National Convention of American Mothers, Inc. this April in Omaha, Nebraska. One honoree will be named the National Mother of the Year during the convention.

Newell has worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs for 38 years, moving up through various positions, to a regional position in the New England Healthcare Network as chief logistics officer, according to a news release from Sabrina Wisher-DeWitt with American Mothers, Inc.

She graduated from Cony High School and has achieved college credits. She is pursuing her logistics leadership certification through Penn State University.

Newell is lecturing knight at the Augusta Elks Lodge No. 964, also serving on the House Committee and as chairperson of the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. She also serves as the treasurer on the Board of the Directors at Howell House in Augusta.
