NEW SHARON – Born on July 27, 1927, took his last breath on this earth on Jan. 24, 2023, and as always, on his own terms. Dan was born and raised in South Lincoln, Vt.

He was drafted into the Army in 1943. Dan honorably served four years in Germany and France as a Sgt. and a Certified Master Heavy Equipment Mechanic. When Dan left the Army and had his discharge physical; that would be the last time in his life that he ever saw a doctor for anything.

Dan met the love of his life, Anna Clark in Vermont, married and had four children. Dan worked as a logger in Vermont, and in 1965 he moved his family to Maine where he continued logging for ten years. Afterward, he worked in a machine shop in Anson and also had his own shop where he performed tractor and auto repairs. In 1987, he purchased his property in New Sharon where he established his homestead. Dan was an avid gardener, but never referred to it as a garden, but instead, “the field”, due to the enormous size of it. Dan harvested his vegetables, dried and jarred his herbs, dried and hand sorted beans, and he canned everything that could be canned. He built a root cellar where he stored his bounty of vegetables through the cold winter months and had enough to sustain him until the next harvest, when he would do it all over again. Dan only heated with wood and harvested his own firewood off his property completely by himself. When his wood splitter recently stopped working, his neighbor offered Dan the use of his, but Dan refused the offer and cut up all his firewood using a chainsaw. He was a very proud man and fiercely independent.

With all of this, Dan also ran a business from home doing tractor repairs, specializing in antique tractors and also selling parts. Dan never stopped working and was the kind of man that you just don’t see any longer. He will be greatly missed by the family he leaves behind.

Dan is survived by his son, David Bent and wife Glenda Soucy-Bent of Norridgewock, his daughter, Debora Bent of Key West, Fla., his son, Jeffrey Bent of Crystal Springs, Fla.; his brother, Louis Bent of New York; his grandchildren, Nicole Bent of Colchester, Vt., Travis Bent of Norridgewock, and Jade Tran of Lunenberg, Mass. He was predeceased by his parents, Morton and Louise (Kelton) Bent; his wife, Anna Grace Clark Bent; his son, Daniel Bent Jr.; his sister, Marjorie Wyman Bent, and his two brothers, Irwin Bent and Robert Bent.

Services will be held in Vermont later in the spring. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dan & Scott’s Cremation & Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington, ME 04938.
