A professional development workshop for teachers is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 18 at the University of Maine’s Hutchinson Center, 80 Belmont Ave. in Belfast.

The event is sponsored by the Maine State Organization of DKG International (The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International), a professional organization of women educators promoting professional and personal growth and excellence in education.

DKG’s annual S-T-R-E-T-C-H-Your Teaching Workshop features session topics that are appropriate for all elementary, middle school, and high school educators, according to a news release from Donna Kennison, Maine State Organization’s immediate past state president.

Justin Styles, teacher at Lyseth Elementary School in Portland, is the keynote speaker. His book “I Hate to Read” discusses strategies he has learned to help the struggling reader.

Other topics are Virtual Reality in the Elementary School by Justina Dill and Wendy Lorigan teachers in School Administrative District 4; Tools to Catch Number Sense with Jen Kirchoff, a teacher in Regional School Unit 71; and Marsh Mystery: Middle School Science with Tonya Prentice, who is one of 10 teachers chosen for the National STEM Scholarship Program.

Also offered is Introduction to Design Thinking with Megan London and Deb Rountree. London is education department chair at Eastern Maine Community College. Rountree is executive director of Rural Development Initiatives at Eastern Maine Community College.

Exploring Free Curriculum Resources from the United Nations is with Priscilla McFarland. She is a retired teacher and current first vice president of Maine State Organization DKG. CTAUN, the Committee on Teaching About the United Nations, provides educators worldwide with opportunities to learn about the work of the United Nations and to incorporate this global awareness into curricula and school activities at all levels.

Storytelling, Collaboration and Community is with Ashley Montgomery. She is the Dean of Teaching, Learning and Assessment at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Early registration — which costs $30, and is $40 after Tuesday, Feb. 28 — includes lunch and a certificate for five and 1/2 contact hours.
