Charley Munn

AUGUSTA – Master Sgt. Charley Munn, U.S. Army (retired), 91, formerly of Hallowell, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023 at the Maine Veterans Home, Augusta, following a long illness.

He was born in Blue Hill on Sept. 15, 1931, a son of the late Vivian and Elizabeth (Emerson) Munn.

Mr. Munn was a Gardiner Area High School graduate and was a member of St. Michael Parish.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, entering into the service in 1951. He served his country honorably in Austria, Germany, Japan, Korea and three tours to Vietnam and at Ft. Eustis, Va. as his main stateside assignment.

Mr. Munn was a member of the American Helicopters Society, Association of the U.S. Army and the Abnaki Council #334 Third Degree and Abnaki Assembly #346 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years (they married on Dec. 15, 1954), Irene (Curry) Munn; two brothers, Earl T. and Irving J. Munn, his sister, Freda Pearson; and a grandson, Timothy Barter, Jr.

Mr. Munn is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth A. Lucas and her husband Kenneth of Benton and Mary Frances Barter and her husband Timothy of Manchester, N.H.; three grandchildren, Kenneth J. Lucas, III and his wife Rachel of Wells, Matthew A. Lucas of Waterville and Jennifer Hall and her husband Jason of Hillsboro, N.H.; two great-grandchildren, Evelina and Amelia Lucas of Wells; a beloved cousin, Harland Hatch and his wife Janet; and very dear friends and brother Knights, David Drapeau and David Dunn as well as Tom McClendon of North Carolina and George Terry of Hampton, Va.

A very special “thank you” goes to the entire staff at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta, especially the wonderful nurses and entire staff of Freedom Bay Delta that cared so lovingly for him in the past nine months.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A graveside service, with full military honors, will be held on Friday, April 28 at 1 p.m. in the old Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
