Scottie Scheffler successfully defended his WM Phoenix Open title Sunday at TPC Scottsdale and regained the No. 1 spot in the world.

Scheffler closed with a 6-under 65 to beat Nick Taylor by two strokes on the Stadium Course. The 26-year-old Texan took the No. 1 ranking from Rory McIlroy with his fifth PGA Tour victory – all in the last 12 months.

Scheffler made a 22-foot eagle putt on the par-5 13th to break a tie with Taylor, then took a two-shot lead on the par-3 16th when he rolled in a 15-footer for par while Taylor made bogey.

Scheffler birdied the par-4 17th with a 5-foot putt and closed with a par to finish at 19-under 265.

Taylor also finished with a 65.

EUROPEAN TOUR: South Africa’s Ockie Strydom shot a 9-under 63 to win the Singapore Classic by one stroke over Finland’s Sami Valimaki.

Strydom carded a final round of 63 – the best score of the final day at Laguna National Golf Resort Club – to finish at 19-under 269 overall for his second win on the European Tour.

WORLD CUP: Falmouth native Emily Sweeney picked up her fifth medal of the season, winning a bronze in a women’s singles race at Winterberg, Germany.

Julia Taubitz of Germany won the race in 1 minute, 51.683 seconds. Anna Berreiter of Germany was second in 1:51.891 and Sweeney was third in 1:52.038.

It was Sweeney’s fourth singles medal of the season, the first three of them being silvers. She also was part of a team relay bronze-medal run for the U.S.

BASKETBALL

NBA: New Orleans Pelicans All-Star Zion Williamson has aggravated his previously injured right hamstring, extending the timeline for his return to “multiple weeks past All-Star break,” basketball operations chief David Griffin said.

Griffin said Williamson, who is averaging 26 points per game this season, had progressed to the point where he was able to participate in 3-on-3 drills in practice and was on the court when he experienced his setback.

• The Golden State Warriors have decided to go through with completion of a trade to acquire Gary Payton II from Portland despite concerns that arose surrounding the guard’s health following offseason surgery for a core muscle injury that sidelined him until last month.

The defending champions had until Sunday night to make a decision whether to rescind the swap that sent center James Wiseman to Detroit. Golden State also will receive unprotected 2026 and ’28 second-round draft picks from Portland while giving up Memphis’ 2026 second-round pick and its own 2028 second-round selection to Portland.

The Pistons traded forward Saddiq Bey to the Hawks and the Blazers acquire forward Kevin Knox II from the Detroit along with three conditional second-round picks from the Hawks.

• Danny Green will sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers once the free agent swingman and three-time NBA champion clears waivers, a person familiar with the agreement told The Associated Press.

• Fred VanVleet scored 35 points, topping 30 for a career-best ninth time this season, and Pascal Siakam added 28 points as the Toronto Raptors beat the Detroit Pistons, 119-118.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Swiss skier Marco Odermatt ended his four-year wait for a world championship medal in impressive style, dominating the men’s downhill with a gutsy run on the demanding L’Eclipse course in Courchevel, France.

Pre-race favorite Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway trailed by 0.48 seconds to add another silver after placing second in Thursday’s super-G.

NHL: Ottawa Senators goaltender Anton Forsberg is out indefinitely after tearing the medial collateral ligament in both of his knees during Saturday’s game against Edmonton.

• Jordan Harris had his first career two-goal game and the Montreal Canadiens earned a 6-2 victory at home against the Edmonton Oilers.

• Erik Karlsson had a goal and two assists, and the San Jose Sharks ended their road trip by beating the Washington Capitals, 4-1.

• Jaden Schwartz scored twice, Jordan Eberle had a goal and an assist and the Seattle Kraken won 4-3 at Philadelphia.

DALLAS OPEN: Wu Yibing became the first Chinese player to win an ATP Tour title, rallying in a three-set, all-tiebreaker thriller to beat John Isner.

Wu, 23, overcame 44 aces from the big-serving Isner – one shy of tying a three-set record – and four match points in a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (12) victory.

OPEN SUD DE FRANCE: Jannik Sinner of Italy won his seventh career singles title by beating American Maxime Cressy, 7-6 (3), 6-3, at Montpellier, France.
