Lynden Breen scored the tying goal for Maine in the first period and Victor Ostman made 23 saves as the Black Bears played to a 1-1 tie against 17th-ranked UMass Lowell in a Hockey East game Sunday at Lowell, Massachusetts.

The River Hawks (15-10-3, 9-6-3 Hockey East) picked up an extra point in the Hockey East standings by winning a shootout, 2-0.

Owen Cole put Lowell in front just 3:27 into the game. Breen tied it at 6:35 with his 16th goal of the season.

Maine is 13-13-3 overall and 7-9-2 in Hockey East.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UMAINE-AUGUSTA 56, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 49: Aija Andrews had 12 points for the SeaWolves (17-6, 10-2 YSCC) in their loss to the Moose (18-6, 9-3) in South Portland.

Ariana Alcide had 14 points and 13 rebounds for UMA.

(1) SOUTH CAROLINA 88, (3) LSU 64: Kamilla Cardoso had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Zia Cooke scored 17 points and the Gamecocks (25-0. 12-0 Southeastern Conference) beat the visiting Tigers (23-1, 11-1) in a showdown of the last two unbeaten teams.

Aliyah Boston finished with 14 points and nine rebounds to help the Gamecocks win their 31st straight game.

The game, billed as a showcase between reigning AP player of the year Boston and Angel Reese, quickly became a highlight reel of South Carolina’s experience, talent and depth. The Gamecocks ran out to an 18-2 lead.

Reese, a 6-foot-3 dominator, couldn’t get going against the Gamecocks’ withering inside presence. She was held to 16 points and four rebounds for her first game this season without double-figure rebounds.

(5) IOWA 111, RUTGERS 57: Molly Davis scored a season-high 17 points, Caitlin Clark added 15 points and 10 assists, and the Hawkeyes (20-5, 12-2 Big Ten) routed the Scarlet Knights (10-16, 4-10) in Iowa City, Iowa.

(6) STANFORD 96, ARIZONA STATE 64: Agnes Emma-Nnopu scored 17 points and Cameron Brink had 15 points and eight rebounds despite playing only 12 minutes to help the Cardinal (24-3, 12-2 Pac-12) beat the Sun Devils (7-16, 0-14) in Tempe, Arizona.

(7) UTAH 73, WASHINGTON STATE 59: Alissa Pili scored 15 points and Gianna Kneepkens had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Utes (22-2, 12-2 Pac-12) past the Cougars (16-9, 6-8) in Salt Lake City.

(8) MARYLAND 82, ILLINOIS 71: Diamond Miller scored 31 points, and the Terrapins (21-5, 12-3 Big Ten) rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit against the Illini (19-7, 9-6) in College Park, Maryland.

(9) DUKE 50, MIAMI 40: Reigan Richardson scored a season-high 14 points and the Blue Devils (22-3, 12-2) turned in another strong defensive performance to beat the Hurricanes (16-9, 9-5) in Durham, North Carolina.

(16) OKLAHOMA 85, KANSAS STATE 68: Liz Scott finished with 20 points and eight rebounds and the Sooners (20-4, 10-3) breezed to a win over the Wildcats (14-11, 3-9) in Manhattan, Kansas.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 68, UMAINE-AUGUSTA 65: The SeaWolves (17-7, 9-4 YSCC) held UMaine-Augusta (11-16, 7-7) scoreless over the final four minutes as they secured a win over the Moose in South Portland.

Jack Pyzynski led SMCC with 19 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and five steals. DeSean Cromwell added 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Thomas Martinotti scored 10 points.

Yonas Medfu finished with 33 points for UMaine-Augusta.

NORTHWESTERN 64, (1) PURDUE 58: Boo Buie scored 26 points, Chase Audige had 15 and the Wildcats (18-7, 9-5 Big Ten) added a signature win in their bid for the school’s second NCAA Tournament appearance, beating the Boilermakers (23-3, 12-3) in Evanston, Illinois.

Northwestern got its first win in 19 games against the No. 1 team in the AP poll.

Zach Edey had 24 points and eight rebounds for Purdue.
