Julia E. (Doughty) Raven

FREEDOM – In the early afternoon of Feb. 23, 2023, Julia E. (Doughty) Raven was taken to be with her husband. She passed away from natural causes 21 days after celebrating her 90th birthday, at her daughter’s home in Freedom.

Julia was born Feb. 2, 1933, to Seth and Estella (Higgins) Doughty of Bath. Julia was one of nine children. Most of her childhood was spent in Bath until she met her husband Floyd Raven. They married Aug. 22, 1948 at Earl Larrabee’s home on Bailey’s Island. Over the next 16 years, they had seven children who were all raised on Raven Road in Freedom. They were married for 61 years until Floyd’s passing in 2009.

When Julia was not working on her chicken farm, she loved to knit. While raising a large family, this hobby came in handy. After her children were raised, she studied to get her GED and then worked as a CNA in private homes and at Mt. St. Joseph’s in Waterville. Julia later drove a bus for Waldo CAP before retiring in 2012 and spent her retirement in Unity.

Julia is survived by her youngest sister, Ruthie Peyregne, of Mobile Ala.; her five children, Dee Overlock of Freedom, Mark Raven of Freedom, Karen Seehafer of Marathon Wis., Jean Raven-Jones of Freedom, and Shawn Raven of Knox; 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd Raven; her father and mother; her brothers Harold Doughty, Seth Doughty Jr., and Elmer Doughty, her sisters Eunice Coombs, June Le Tendre, Rose Barter, Doris Black; her daughter, June Raven, her son, Floyd Raven Jr. “Manny”; her grandson, Carson Seehafer; and her son-in-law, Fred Overlock.

At this time no funeral service will be held. She will be buried alongside her husband in the spring at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Freedom.

Julia would like to thank Kim Overlock, a close friend, and caregiver, for looking after her while she lived in Unity. Jane, Patty, and Trudy were also kind friends to her.

It must not go without recognizing the team of individuals from Gentiva Hospice who made the last months of Julia’s life very special. A heartfelt thank-you to the nurses and CNA’s who provided the best care for Julia, while under hospice care.
